Best collection I've read
When you pick up a book by Joshua Ferris, you know that he will take you on an unforgettable journey through a slightly bizarre reality. This collection of short stories is not any difference. I read them all in one sitting.
I was dazzled by all of Ferris' previous work and his short stories are nearly of that high caliber, but his novels are pretty much the few modern masterpieces in the last 20 or so years, when MFA programs have completely destroyed literature.
Full of Ferris's fantastic observations and modern humor. I could read entire novels filled with Joe from "More Abandon" and the husband in "Fragments".
This was solid, but ultimately forgettable. It never felt like a chore to read it, but looking back on it 2 months later I only really remember the first story, and that one only mostly.
"What does a real man do when he knows he's done something wrong?" Here's a fantastic collection of stories that ponder this question. You will recognize these characters from your real life, and you will see yourself in all of them. Breezily written but no less thought-provoking.
Love the title and the blurb. Sadly that's where the love stops. I was excited to see a collection of short stories about a bunch of 20s and 30s somethings and their modern tribulations of marriage, ambition and fear of missing out but after 3 stories I was ready to dnf it. Persevered through cause I thought oh you know there might be a good one in the later stories but again I was left disappointed. I'll save you the trouble of reading this and sum it up for you in one line - miserable, whiny white men making everyone else around them miserable too.
I think this man has been cheated on before.
Some stories were good, I skipped two, and others were weird and hard to follow. However, all (that I read) were thought to provoke.
Quotes
What does a man do — and I mean a real man, now, what does a real man do — when he knows he’s done something wrong?
