I sit here trying to find the right words to describe my love for Pits & Poison: These Godly Lies, the second and final book in the duology R. Raeta has gifted us.

Peaches & Honey: These Immortal Truths, Book 1 introduces a unique and refreshing concept: a girl from the 12th century is bestowed with a magical peach that grants her immortality, a divine gift in recognition of her inherent goodness. Anna's character is a living testament to this goodness as she traverses through centuries of history, always selflessly giving and burying her trauma and needs. The presence of Khiran, her god, is a constant, weaving a love story that defies the boundaries of time. This intriguing blend of fantasy and romance is a must-read for any lover of the genre.

Pits & Poison continues the story of a love that transcends time. It is the story of Anna and Kieran trying to find their peace while on the run from the First One, the one god ruling them all mercilessly and without any love or care. In Book 2, we get more information and details, as well as some old and some new characters.

I am in awe of Rachelle's writing style; it is truly enchanting and deserves to be savored.

"Love is too small a word", he murmurs, "but I suppose it will do".

The book evoked a range of emotions in me, from tears to laughter, and I found myself rooting for the characters to discover beauty in a world scarred by tragedy, to protect their love with unwavering strength, and yet find the compassion to aid those in need. Each scene was meticulously crafted, stirring my heart to break and heal repeatedly.

The sacrifices Kieran makes to have more time with Anna, to show her the world, and to just be with her are so special.

"He can see it in her eyes - a last, wordless appeal to leave her behind and save himself. To run. As if he could ever find peace on a path she didn't share".

With all the love, the devotion, the pain, the heartbreak, I was counting the pages till the end. And it was so bittersweet; I love the way the story ended for Anna and Kieran, but I was devastated I had to say goodbye to them.

Rachelle has crafted a world and emotions like no other, and I am so honored to have been a part of the ARC team. This book has truly touched my heart, and I can't wait for you to experience the same emotions and journey that I did.

I think this duology as a whole was a great idea but there were LONG stretches of the characters just living their lives and it seemed to drag on.

I also feel like the first and second book and just completely different in a lot of ways. I couldn’t even figure out what the plot was for the first book until the very end when you learn of “The First” and I think the author had a lot of missed opportunities for starting that storyline like half way through the first book, introduced more of the other gods in the first and throughout the second.

It just seems like the author didn’t know where she was going to take the story and was just winging it. It was a great idea and the characters were so lovable but there plot and storyline was boring most of the time, the plot wasn’t even evident until the last 20% of the first book and even the second seemed like more filler than storyline.

Unwell but happy

I had the honour of being an early reader of Raeta's dazzling sequel and while I'm still trying to find the words that could possibly describe hers, I also need to immediately tell you all how wonderful this was.

Sequels can be a tricky thing, but there was so much more to this story and this sequel delivers more gods, more tension, more travel through time and continents, and beautifully crafted friendships along the way. Not to mention the relationship at the core of the story, which only continues to bloom.

Raeta has a wonderful way with words where they seem to linger on the page in this dreamy, warm state that lulls me into a false sense of safety. Because this was, as we've come to expect, also very heartbreaking. The mix of emotions is what makes this a wonderful journey with a perfectly planted ending that will leave readers wholly satisfied.

The second in a duology this follows directly from the first book Peaches and Honey. With a little more plot - diving into more of the God's/Immortals, how they came to be and running away from The First - I found the world building and premise kept me reading. However it's still quite slow, with a lot of running happening until about the 75% mark. I also found the conflict resolution to be tied up so easily compared to nearly a books worth of build up and the ending left me unsatisfied.

(Like the fact that they become human again, feel so unsatisfied and then take the only two peaches once more destroys a lot of the burden of being a God that was developed throughout both books. It felt a bit of a rushed ending and a cop out for me)

I think on a whole this duology could have fit into just the one book, most of the travelling about and fluff cut out since it didn't really aid in the character development that much and proved repetitive at the end.

A good sequel to end the duology. Kind of dragged a bit in the middle when Khiran and Anna were just running away from the antagonists. Also The First was not that bad of a villain and killed off way too easily. Also it was a bit confusing if Anna had special powers? All in all good to have a happy ending and I enjoyed this universe, the first book more so.
