Not as good as the first one, but solid.
The ending was not properly led up to. I don’t think we got enough exploration of who The First is. He was defeated so quickly after we finally meet him that it felt anticlimactic. I wish we would have also gotten more of an exploration of Anna’s powers. I’d that had been more clearly threaded through what are essentially tableaus of their life, it would have felt like the story was leading up to something.
I’m conflicted about the ending. On one hand, I think it would have been fitting for them to have finally been able to live a mortal life; however, I would not have been thrilled with this ending given Khirans health. I do like that the ending gives them a second shot at immortality as clearly Khiran was not well, but when so much of the books have reflected on the limitations and heartache that come with that it feels…like a cop out maybe? I feel like it undermines their story in a way.
Regardless, I would still recommend this duology!
