This book is the definition of mixed feelings.
I liked:
- The style; she alternated between giving a speech formal tone, and casual day-to-day tone which gave the book a relatable feel.
- Parts about empowering women, especially motherhood and the torturous path of a woman of color towards success.
- Parts about social change, especially female empowerment and diet changes.

I didn't like:
-Using the book as a platform to send political hits, even tho she mentioned continuously that she didn't believe or is not actively involved in politics.
- Making petty comments trying to defend herself against past political attacks.
- Not enough vulnerability, when needed. Don't get me wrong, I know she's a strong woman, but if we wanted to hear about achievements or moments of strengths, we would've watched the news.

Very frank and open

Mrs. Obama narrated a very frank and open biographic story of her life. Her telling of her own life from early childhood, the relationship she has with her family and the effects of the deaths of her Aunt Robbie and father had on her is very heart-wrenching. Her family is a very lose and loving one. Her education is the key to her success. I like how she and the president met and how she was hesitant where he was concerned, after all, she was his boss. She does not pretend to have a perfect marriage with her husband but admits that it is strongly based on open communication and compromise and most of all love. Her dislike for politics was placed in the background so that her husband could achieve his goal even though it took its toll on her and their girls.

This story was listened to using Audible.

Such a cool story of the journey from a South Side middle-class childhood to the wife of the president of the United States. While politically we will probably always differ, I have always appreciated Michelle's take on a lot of things, and hearing the story of how she became the woman she is was a pleasure. She is a wonderful writer, and the audiobook is narrated by her which always just feels like someone is telling you their story. 4 stars.

I listened to this as an audiobook
This book is great. Well written and well read by Michelle.
The parts about her life before she became first lady were my most favorite especially her childhood and her undergrad days at Princeton.
It got a bit more tedious for me towards the end, where I think she was being very wordy and verbose.
Overall a very inspiring story and book for underprivileged people with big dreams and confidence in their dreams, for women, for people of color. It lays bare America's issues with slavery, racism and discrimination against poor people especially if they are poor and not white. I also find it refreshing how Michelle shouts out all the people who helped her along her journey in meaningful/supportive or even obstructive ways.
I also like how she did not shy away from describing problems modern women face and how they have to do the bulk of domestic labor and give up or put their dreams on hold to take on domestic and child rearing/caretaking roles. President or not, men seem to not pull their weight at home. This was a revelation for me regarding President Obama
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes Michelle, who wants to know more about her life with President Obama and their love story (Which I knew nothing about), her struggles and her triumphs, to young people especially to young women with dreams.
