I have to be careful when reviewing longer books. So much time has been spent reading, I don't want to NOT like any 500+ page books.
But with Little Star, there is no doubt. I really liked it.
Lindqvist is being compared to Stephen King. That's an insult to John. He writes much better than King, especially when writing dialog. But this novel is a lot like a King story. Lots of action, a little gore, and tons of tense scary moments.
I recommend this one!

I came out of this novel not really knowing what the fuck the writer was trying to say. There's some critiques of fame and the exploitation of young girls who become stars, but there's also this dark fairy-tale element.

The novel opens with a man foraging for mushrooms in the woods, when he comes upon a plastic bag with a nearly-dead baby in it. He manages to revive her, and takes her home where, until she's about 12, she's under lock and key, lied to about the world, and basically fucked up by weirdly abusive "parents". Until she manages, maybe inadvertently, to escape.

Eventually, she becomes well-known for her singing voice and starts what is kind of...a cult? I don't know. I mean, the book was easy to read and well-paced and entertaining, but I was just left asking "what the fuck" and not in the "that's fucked up and awesome" kind of way. Parts of it I really liked, but overall it fell flat.

It's between three and four stars for me. The characters and their mental struggles and declines were the spookiest part, especially Teresa's, but the ending just didn't feel satisfying. I would have liked to have seen a back story for Theres, at least an explanation as to why she was left. Overall, I enjoyed it, as with all of Lindqvist's books.

I seem to have lost our copy of Let the Right One In but sat on my shelf was Little Star, and given that I've been reading a couple of Scandinoir novels I thought I'd give this one a go. I wasn't sure what to expect, especially given there were comparisons to Stephen King (who I've never read and I've never been sure I wanted to read). I'm also not a horror fan (films or books) so I went into this book with a degree of trepidation. When there was the addition of wolves I was concerned we were heading down a Twilight route, but we didn't meet any vampires (phew! not my thing either); just a group of teenage girls all set on revenge on society.

Theres, rescued from the woods as a baby and having an amazing gift for music (but also a thirst for blood) becomes a rejected star when she sings on the equivalent of X-Factor. A group of girls, her fans, and each of whom have been subjected to forms of bullying, form a gang with Theres, and plan to show everyone else they can't be messed with. The end of the story goes a little crazy, and not necessarily in a good way for all the girls, but overall it was a good read. I was pleasantly surprised; yes the book is gruesome in parts, there's lots of death and doing of unpleasant things to other individuals, but the characters were surprisingly engaging and I wanted to know what was going to happen next.
