I enjoyed the topic and the author's writing style. While being a bit slow at the start the pace got faster about halfway through the book. It's an interesting topic and I really like the descriptions of the de-extincted animals and the place in general, I could easily envision it in my mind. I would have loved to see more of the mentioned animals though, and for a thriller, in my opinion, the pace was a bit too slow, especially at the beginning, but it was overall OK.

The story itself, well, I can just see how this could easily happen someday in the near future. As the main character says at the end "If something can be done, it will be done" ... And many things can go wrong when mankind tries to play God (just think Jurassic Park with creatures from a different period of Earth's history).

While not being the most intense thriller I've ever read, I sure enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to anybody who likes this topic, too, and doesn't mind a somewhat more relaxed pace.

DID NOT FINISH: 5%

I’m less than 30 minutes in and Douglas Peterson has already sexualized the two female characters for no reason.  Riiiight a detective needs to sleep naked to make getting dressed faster. Suuuure

I have read too many Pendergast books that I expected him to pop up so often. This was my first Douglas Preston book, normally I read his books paired with Child and it read very similar to those which was GREAT. I love the way the book was written, how action packed it was and made me want to get back into the forensic field.

This is my first time reading Douglas Preston,I should have read him sooner! The story and characters are absolutely amazing.
Erebus is a resort situated in an enclosed valley in the Colorado Rockies. It takes up 92,ooo acres. What makes it special is that it's scientists have de-extincted five different species of animals, that roam the park. Guests can see their biggest attraction, the wooly Mammoth along with other giant herbivores.
The trouble begins when a honeymooning couple go missing from their campsite in Erebus. The husband's father is a billionaire and there is immense pressure to solve the disappearance of the couple quickly.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation sends in Detective Frances "Frankie" Cash as agent in charge. This is her first time leading an investigation. She is working along-side the Local Sheriff, James Colcord. I really did enjoy both these characters.
The staff of Erebus assure Frankie that this is NOT a Jurassic park situation. None of their animals can be responsible. As the investigation progresses, forensics point to it being a group of people involves, not animals.
Things continue to get stranger and more dangerous as Cash and Colcord continue to dig. They meet resistance every step of the way.
As I was reading, I had an idea of what I thought must be going on, then something happens that made me complete change my mind, except I was right. I can't tell you what my idea was because that would be a major spoiler.

This book would have been 4 starts but by the 5th mention of the female lead’s body/size/diet I was annoyed.

3.5, maybe 3.75 stars. It's interesting for sure. I sat down in the morning to read it and I finished it at lunch time. The plot points are put together quite well, even if some parts didn't make much sense. I expected Jurassic Park vibes, with scientists debating morality and reason. Given that the focus was on the mystery/murder case, this of course didn't happen (but that's my bad for not reading the blurb properly).
The female characters suffer badly from "written by a man syndrome", on top of the overall stereotypical nature of...everyone. This would undoubtedly do well as a Blockbuster (that I would, embarrassingly enough, totally watch).
