It's a very informative read. I've read up on the assassination of Lincoln before, so I was aware of Booth's plotting in the days leading up to it. But the book also included information that I did not know. Example: President Lincoln admired Shakespeare plays. In fact, Julius Caesar is said to be his favorite play. And strangely enough, Julius Caesar was betrayed and murdered by his own countryman just like Lincoln.

It is also noted that Lincoln was assassinated on Good Friday--a special day that is associated with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ (another person who was betrayed by his own people).

The book also mentions that Lincoln had dreams about his assassination. He knew for a long time that Confederate sympathizers hated him. He received dozens of threats and his security detail man even warned him about it. Mr. Lincoln chose to live his life the way he wanted. Deep down, he knew it would happen at some point. He just didn't know exactly when.

It was a fairly good book. I don't think I'll re-read it again. While it's informative and well researched, I think it's just too depressing for me.
informative reflective

Excellent read! It had me captivated for every moment. In the beginning, it was a little slow, but for a lover of history facts (like me), it's excellent all the way through. It goes into great detail explaining the entire plot to kill Lincoln; I never knew that Booth had accomplices who were supposed to kill Vice President Johnson and Secretary of State Seward on the same night as Lincoln! Interesting little facts like those kept me intrigued throughout the book. I highly recommend this book for any lover of history, especially the Civil War. I read this book as I was studying the Civil War in history class at school and it has helped me greatly. The audiobook version is excellent too. Mr. O'Reilly does an amazing job at reading it and emphasizing certain parts.

Martin Dugard does a lot of the research with Bill O’Reilly in this book. Which makes me want to read the other books they’ve worked on in this series. I like that there are a lot of facts through out the book without foot notes, but the book reads much more like a thriller or suspense.

LOved IT. He needs to do Hitler next

Learned a lot!
informative slow-paced

This is a great entry-level book for Lincoln history. Written like a thriller and is quite the page turner, even though you probably know how it ends. People are critical about references to conspiracies but the author does a good job pointing out when it is merely speculation.

DID NOT FINISH: 25%

This book is so damn boring. I tried reading it for myself and couldn’t get through it. A year later I came back to it and tried listening to the audible version.  Listening to Bill O’Reilly read it is waaaay worse. I Literally said out loud that I freaking hate this book and permanently deleted it from my library so I did not ever have to look at it again. It has been in my library since 2013 for reference.

Loved this book! Bill O'Reilly makes history come alive in this action-packed and suspenseful book. It reads almost like a novel in its portrayal of the various historical figures and its fast-paced narrative. The only part I wasn't crazy about was the beginning, which was mostly about the end of the Civil War, what moves and blunders and successes the two armies had, and how the war ultimately was won. If you're a Civil War buff, you'll love it. I was a little bored. But the rest of the book more than made up for it! The story of John Wilkes Booth, his associates, his motivations and his devious actions make for riveting reading. The story of the assassination plot and execution are set up in a day-by-day and then hour-by-hour format, which keeps you on the edge of your seat. O'Reilly also does a wonderful job of bringing the reader into the time and place, with his descriptions of 19th century America. If you love American history, but especially if you don't..... get this book and read it!
