This account of Lincoln's assassination read like a novel and yet was very enlightening in regards to the facts and theories surrounding John Wilkes Booth's infamous crime.
This book was full of very interesting tidbits and fun facts that you've never heard about the Lincoln assassination. I listened to this book on tape, and thought that the reader was a little dry, but the content was definitely interesting. The book actually begins with a long explanation about the end of the Civil War that was interesting, but also seemed like a very roundabout way to tell the story of the assassination. I Learned a lot from this book, and it was written in a way that was... I would quite say like a thriller, but definitely more exciting than your average nonfiction book.
Really fast, exciting read. Not astounding, and much of this history is already known, and I liked the way it was written. That being said, I found that sometimes the prose switched from past tense to present tense and back again, for no reason. That irritated me. But an excellent, quick read for anyone who likes history.
A page turner, but I've read that there are some inaccuracies. It really inspires me to want to read Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin - the book upon which the excellent Spielberg movie Lincoln was based.
At first i thought this book would be B-O-R-I-N-G but it's written like a novel! it's really interesting if your like a Historical geek like me!!!!!! Bill O'Reilly is sort of a opinionated but it's his opinions that i find interesting I'm mean that's all part of being open minded right? Anyway REALLY good book if your a Historical fan this is nonfiction but i think you will fall in love wilth it just like i did!!!! ;)
This was really interesting and even though I knew the outcome, my heart still pounded. Mr. O'Reilly stated that he wrote this as a thriller and he didn't lie about that. Amazing how riveting history can be, even when you've already learned it.
informative
fast-paced
I didn't know what to expect when I picked up this book. History can be presented in such a dry manner. Not this time! Even though I knew what was going to happen, there was an intensity and a feeling of adrenaline rush the whole time I was reading it, and this strange sense of hoping for a different outcome, even though it is impossible. And there is so much more to the story than the few facts we're taught in school. If history were presented like this -- brought to life in such a way that you can relate to the emotions at play as much as the facts and get a feel for the real people -- I would have paid far better attention when I was in my various history classes! I can't wait to check out "Killing Kennedy" now, based on how much this one sucked me right in from page one.
Very interesting and very readable. A good account of the events surrounding Lincon's assassination. This book was much more comprehensive than I expected, spanning details about the end of the Civil War, the capture of Booth, and the conspiracy to kill other government officials at the same time. I listened to the book and that many hours of Bill O'Reilly was a little crazy. This book was super intriguing--even though I knew the outcome--but I rated it lower because it seemed so speculative. Some of the conversations and details that were presented as facts surely can't be know. I know the 1860s weren't the dark ages but I just find it hard to believe that some historical license wasn't taken to make this book more readable. I don't know, I did just listen to it...maybe the print book has some footnotes or endnotes that provide more context/sources but I must say that I am skeptical about some of it. I did learn a lot though, especially about Booth and his accomplices! I would have liked to learn more about Dr. Samuel Mudd, as he is one of my very very distant relatives. :)
So much history so many facts and conspiracy details surrounding not only Lincoln but Booth. I found this so intriguing. Definitely for readers who love history. O' Reilly has an intriguing way of writing.
Don't see the need to add profanity tho. Always makes me wonder how do we really know what what all was said.
