I've always wanted to read about the events leading to the tragic assassination of Abraham Lincoln and this book was perfect! I learned so much not just about the events leading up to it, but also about the end of the Civil War.

Although this is a history book, it read almost as if it was a murder mystery novel. The writing just took me into the story and allowed me to learn more about all people in play. It kept me wanting to keep reading and learn more even though the ending it already known.

The pictures and maps used through the novel were very helpful. Using them gave a clear picture of where events happened, as well as, visuals of the names we kept reading about. I liked the fact that this book breaks down every key played involved with the assassination plan. In school we always only learned about Booth obviously. It was interesting finally to see just how many people were in play. I did enjoy understanding just exactly why Booth did what he did.

When this book arrived in my mail, I to a moment to glance through it, luckily dinner was in the crockpot, because I didn't put it down once I opened it. Full of interesting facts, told in storytelling fashion, it kept my attention.

GREAT book! I love 'different' takes on history. They authors seemed to have done a lot of research to give so much information. I know that they sometimes have to 'create' dialogue or thoughts, but reading it makes you think they HAD to be thinking/doing something along those lines. I'll definitely be getting to his next book soon!

Not terrible, but not amazing. I guess I was expecting a little more shock and scandal. I listened to this one on Audible (audiobooks are awesome), and Bill O’Reilly kept pronouncing “cavalry” as “Calvary”. Very annoying.

History has always fascinated me, so when I saw this book I thought, why not. Lincoln is and always one of those figures that embodies such a great character. To see his end days play out, how the different pieces came together, was eye opening.

Considering that this is fiction, it was quite fascinating. I was never much of a history buff, but have recently become more interested in historical stories, novels, biographies. This one was a good start. It kept me riveted and needing to know more, until the very end.

Unsurprising, the writing was just bad. I tried to stay unbiased in reading this, but I couldn't handle the number of times that O'Reilly referred to Lincoln as "Majestic." I didn't finish the book.

Low expectations may have helped, but I thought this was a very good read.

In opposition to how sensationalized and interesting the assassination plot was, though, the first part of the book, about the battles at the end of the Civil War, was incredibly dry, detailed, and unnecessary. You can skip right to Part Two (Chapter 16) with no problem.
informative mysterious medium-paced

There was something about the way the book was written that I didn't like very much. At times, it was overly dramatic. It also didn't get very interesting to me until they got to the night of the murder, and the "hunt" for Booth at the end. I would have liked to hear more of the other conspiracy theories out there, and was disappointed that it was really only briefly touched on. Overall, interesting read. I honestly didn't know anything about the assassination of Lincoln before reading this, so it was also pretty informative.

Spoiler alert*The north wins the civil war and Lincoln is assassinated* WIth that said I was riveted to this book. I enjoy history but am by no means a historian so there are many aspects of the Lincoln assassination I knew nothing about. I was afraid this book would be dry, but it was detailed without rambling on, moving at a fast pace and easy to read.
