Interesting story, quite different. Taken up with a lot of detail and alien lore.
Liked both MCs. Love that Liam ended up with someone to care for him after how poorly he was treated in the past. Love how sweet Ondry is to him.
Liked the take on dom/sub relationships, liked that subs are valued and prized in the alien’s culture. Overall I found story a little slow, but was possibly just the narration. Enjoyable.

I really enjoyed how Lyn took the idea of D/S and turned it into a sci-fi alien species story. I was definitely in a different mindset when I read this. The miscommunication, the difference of expectations and the differences in what was acceptable and not acceptable between the Rownt and Humans had me captivated from the beginning. It did take me a while to make the connection that Lyn was trying to convey, but when I did, it all fell together and it worked. I really enjoyed this unique story.

The series is my biggest find of 2024 so far. Liam has survived a troubled home life and years of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse in the sex trade and under unscrupulous military commanders. He trains as a linguist and escapes the front to work as a trader on an alien planet. Ondry is a local trader who befriends Liam and helps him improve his language and cultural skills. The two form a strong connection. When Liam's new commander puts him at risk, Ondry steps in to help. This book is a deep exploration of an alien society and an unlikely bond between two people from vastly different backgrounds. The deftness with which Liam and Ondry's relationship is woven into the study of Rownt culture is remarkable. A huge five star read I've consumed with both eyes and ears so far this year. John Solo is a sometimes-good, sometimes-not narrator for me, but he really shines throughout this series.

Really good
I’ve enjoyed a couple of this author’s other books and decided to give this a try, even though sci-fi is not really my thing. It was SO enjoyable, and the cultural differences were explained in an understandable way that (fortunately) was not an info dump.
I was a little annoyed at first that the book ended at 79% unexpectedly, but the bonus stories actually provided much-needed insight. I’ll definitely continue the series.

From my calibre library:
Too short tbh. Probably would've been better if I read the Prelude first. I like the worldbuilding though.

Unique and closely grounded in the individualistic experience without losing the awareness of the alien world on which it is set.
