very much introspective. also felt very bad about the whole situation. one super cute marco/rachel moment but this book really solidified that it’s rachel/tobias who are endgame.

Really devastating sad one, woof. I’m such a sucker for the free Hork-Bajir tbh.
A real surpise, considering that I consider Tobias to be my least favorite Animorph (after Ax, of course, because Ax is the worst - sentient enough to understand advanced mathematics and science but reduced to a toddler's sensibilities when confronted with food). But maybe not, now. That's how good this one was.
There was a heck of a lot of angst going on here. But it worked, I think, because this was a really pivotal book, emotionally. Tobias came to some realizations and decided to keep on fighting the good fight. And that's all that really matters.

Aw, Tobias has my whole heart. Even with that bias, this book still feels worthy of every star in this 5 star review. Yes, the philosophizing in this one was a bit more in-your-face than past novels. It still was spot on and ahead of its time in the thoughtful compassion that you expect from a character like Tobias (though lol, you could see a bit of Cassie in here, too; ah, my two faves!). A fascinating plot as well where Tobias's struggle to feel a sense of belonging in terms of who (or what!) he is comes to the forefront. It's rare that a series could actually pick up steam 23 novels in. This does and makes me eager to read more!
Also, this is unimportant but personally I love that *finally* there was some direct discussion on the romance between him and Rachel...I appreciate that the series does not focus on romance to the exclusion of friendship and chosen family (its actual heart), but gosh, I do find slow burns a bit annoying when dragged out this long and it was nice to at least see RachelxTobias addressed, which hasn't happened in 10(?) novels.
