There were some really beautiful moments between Marcus and Will, but in the end I wanted more out of this book. And I still hated Will just as much at the end as I did at the beginning.

The best Nick Hornby book period. And a great movie. And a great soundtrack, thanks to Badly Drawn Boy.

My first foray into Nick Hornby's writing provided a humorous and thoughtful character study that can leave even the worst skeptics believing that there's hope for even the weirdest of us. Good beach reading. (I'd give it 3-1/2 stars, but that's not an option.)
A fine lettura mi sembra di aver imparato qualcosa di più sulla vita, e su me stessa: il "ragazzo" del titolo potrebbe essere Marcus, potrebbe essere Will, ma... potrei essere anch'io.

I felt like this was chick lit for guys: a nice story (albeit a bit too focused on suicide for a light read) with endearing characters and a quirky sense of humor.
Will is pretty damned shallow indeed. He's never had to work an hour of his life due to royalty payments on a Christmas song called "Santa's Super Sleigh" that his father wrote several decades before and, as a result, he can concentrate on what he likes which includes shopping, watching TV, going to bars with friends, and dating. However, his pool of women have dried up a bit lately. So, he creates a fake son so he can join a single parents support group and meet women who are, quite obviously, very single. It is at these meetings that he meets Marcus, the son of a friend of one of the support group women. Marcus's mom Fiona is quite different as an anti-establisment child of the 60s and her non-conformist values have been forced on Marcus. This makes him very un-hip and, therefore, the target of ridicule and bullying at his school. In Will, Marcus sees the chance to become cool. In Marcus, Will really doesn't see much, but he reluctantly takes the kid under his wing anyway. Very funny and touching story about an odd couple relationship between a grown man and a child whose maturity outreaches his own. Again, another very funny, insightful, and brutally honest look at how men operate by Hornby.
