HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Very funny and touching. Perhaps reading his other books is a good idea. Side note: The movie version differs slightly in some scenes, but others are word-for-word. Hugh Grant was perfectly cast.
I've been in a british lit kick lately, and i enjoyed this book very much. I found myself wishing over and over that it wasn't from the library, so that I could highlight passages every page or so. the characters were well-developed and warm, and it was funny to look back on the 90's.
HOWEVER. I'm not quite sure what i was supposed to "take away" from this novel. Marcus spends the book wondering what the best way to go about life is... and the book ends with the idea that it doesn't matter who you surround yourself with, as long as you're surrounded and they are easily replaced.... and he himself is not even sure of that. and also! he sacrifices his identity to survive high school. I understand that in order to survive you need to maybe adapt a little. but isn't there balance somewhere? that message is almost as bad as the ending of Grease...

What can I say? When I finish reading a Nick Hornby novel, I always feel full up with the warm fuzzies and immediately want to find another of his books to dive into. Swoon.

I didn't know this was a movie lol. Maybe I'll try it and see if it's better?

This is one of those books where I don't feel bad about enjoying the movie equally. The movie is cute and funny and has Hugh Grant (and I can't help myself, I think he's charming-- in that stuttery sort of way). The book seemed a lot darker, somehow. All the characters are even more messed up. Which is fine; I just take the book and move as separate entities and enjoy them both, but in different ways.
fast-paced
I adore Marcus 2minutes after he is introduced I want to hug him,in the middle I want to hug him and by the end still hugworthy, thats about the same amount of times you want to smack Will but in a loving, don't make a mess of things way.Fun book, beautifully written.
I originally began this book when I was 15: I’m now 22. Probably the longest read of my life? Ok I picked this back up in February, gave up, and finally read it in a couple of days now my summer depression has hit. I saw the movie years ago , so long ago I have no idea if there are any differences - I don’t remember Kurt Cobain being referenced at all in the movie?
Anyway, a nice light read. For a book dealing with a lot of serious subjects, it kept it light and made me laugh out loud a few times - I like sarcasm ok. I found every character quite irritating , but in a charming way. Not much else to say, average - I will read some more Nick Hornby’s and see how this compares to the rest (hopefully I won’t be 30 by the time I finish the next one!)
