The story in this book was great and I was invested in the romance, but I was going into the book expecting a Star Wars-esque sci-fi novel, not for it to turn into I Am Legend halfway through. Every scene involving the afflicted just put a slightly queasy feeling in my stomach, which made me seriously consider stopping early, but I pushed through. The last 100 pages was super intense and everything besides the afflicted’s involvement was really interesting, but I’m definitely going to have to do some research into how heavily the plague features in the sequel before picking it up. That aspect was too intense for my taste and made it not so fun to finish this book for me. Everything besides that was good, though! Just go into this story prepared for some seriously intense chunks.

I don't even know where to start with this book. I put off reading it for so long because sci/fi really isn't my thing. In hindsight, I'm so mad at myself! This book was just amazing. Its a strange and wonderful combination of sci/fi in space, AI takeover, and medical thriller(think outbreak). While reading, I found myself almost getting a fight or flight response to the situations happening in this book. The twist at the end just had me like....what??? I didn't see it coming at all. All in all 5 stars and I'm so glad it was the first book of 2020 for me.

I ████ing loved this book!
It was a bit confusing to read at first but by the 200 page mark I got really into it. I loved Kady and her story a lot. The way you read the book was also really fun. You were kind of figuring out what was happening and how it happened through files and text messages. I can't wait to read Gemina!

What a gorgeous book. The multimedia form of narrative was extremely innovative and visually interesting.

The downside of this format, however, was that sometimes it was jammed with too much information (like these wikipedia-like articles about battles or reports from events), and it was sometimes difficult to connect to the characters because you only heard from them through IMs and emails and reports on video feeds. How am I supposed to truly know a character through these forms?

Kaufman and Kristoff present a fascinating concept as well, both in the conflict between corporations set in space, and the personal relationship between Kady and Ezra. I love that they broke up that day that everything came crashing down and we get to learn about their relationship after it had already happened. The plot twists and turns were often unexpected and shocking.

My only other concern with the novel was how long it was. Did all of those little pieces of information really need to be included? The pacing moved incredibly slow at times and incredibly fast at others. The novel was sort of gargantuan and I personally felt that the length was a negative.

Was debating whether to give this 3 or 4 stars but in the end I think its a low 3.5. While the three main characters were a bit derivative, they did grow on me and the book is unique, to me, in its stylisation. While I liked most aspects of the format of the book, it wasn't always a good thing, as the styling of the action scenes and others in space were really jarring to me. The twists were okay, but I do dislike when books can't commit to a twist and has to backtrack, as Illuminae did, but I did prefer that that particular moment was undone. Overall a good, different read with a satisfying ending.
