Very, very cool book. Would've pulled an all nighter to read it in one sitting had it not been for the fact that I live with someone else. Gotta say though, and I felt this multiple times while reading as well, HOW IS THERE MORE THAN WHAT I'VE READ SO FAR? HOW CAN THIS GET EVEN WORSE??
Anyways I'm picking up the sequel today, obviously. And maybe the third installment as well. Just so I won't have to go out to get it tomorrow.
Binging books is back, baby!

I definitely enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Loved the unique story-telling method, loved the character dynamics. However, I found myself losing steam in the final third of the book. I just felt like I had been reading the book for so long. And maybe that's because I don't often read 600 page sci-fi novels but still. It was just a little too much "oh weird AI oh god more death oh goodness must hack something!" and I was getting bored. Also reading AIDAN's sections was for some reason so annoying after a while? I never knew reading centered text for more than a couple of pages would annoy me so much, but it did.
The ending really brought it up to 4 stars for me. It hit all the emotional upticks, and ended with just enough mystery and intrigue to lead into another installment. It really was a well-done book.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and am interested to continue in the series, especially if I can find the sequel for a discounted price.
REREAD in 2025. Bumping up from a 4 to a 4.5!

At first I was skeptical about the format of this story. Books told through documents are rarely as engaging as ones with regular narration, but the chat logs made the characters come alive and allowed you to get to know them, as well as the format allowed for some of the pages to be incredibly visually beautiful.

I loved this book! Some may not appreciate the epistolary presentation, but once you get used to it, it’s quite a fun read. I also acquired the audiobook which was absolutely incredible! They used a myriad of readers that also utilized special effects. I would recommend listening and following along in the book. It provides added suspense and theatrics.
Both the format and the sheer scope of the story world took some getting used to, I'll admit. I didn't instantly love this, the way so many other people seem to. But once the shipboard secrets began surfacing and the mysterious plague began to afflict the survivors, I got hooked so fast it wasn't even funny.
For whatever reason, Kady and Ezra both became much more interesting to me once their paths diverged. In trying to forget each other and forge new paths, they grew into braver and funnier and far more dynamic individuals. I had so much fun reading about Kady's hacking exploits, and some of the conversations between Ezra and his fellow pilots made me laugh out loud. The last 300-400 pages flew by, as the action intensified and the stakes rose higher and higher. This is a book with an extremely high body count, no question about that, but it's also the kind of book that makes you care about every last character left on board the ship. Even, or especially, when it begins to seem like nobody will survive the (literal) madness taking hold on board.
If you're also the sort of reader who struggles to find their feet in epistolary novels, try giving ILLUMINAE a little more time to entice you. I promise you won't regret it.

this book said “oh you don’t like sci-fi? too bad. i’m going to fuck you up” and i said “uh”
I really enjoyed this book thoroughly. By far my favorite parts were from AIDANS point of view, it added another layer and tugged my heart strings extra hard haha. With time i’ll probably come back and change my 4 stars to 5 stars but i put it at 4 stars right now because I believe the book could have had a beautiful ending without Kady being rescued. I was surprised but didn’t mind finding out Ezra was never actually dead but Kady getting pulled from the escape pod back onto the Hypatia and reunited with Ezra just didn’t feel necessary to me. Otherwise loved the creative way this book was written. It was very engaging and I hope to enjoy the rest of the Illuminae Files. :)
