I started reading this as a pirated ebook, a scanned comic. This is because the original comic is no longer available, and may never be, thanks to a piss-fest regarding the license rights.

I eventually had to put down the iPad, though, because the scan quality is very bad. Bummer - the story seemed excellent.

Update: I've miraculously been lended the physical comic.

Seminal early Alan Moore work, but I still enjoyed it more than I expected to. Good writing doesn't age, and despite all superhero writing in the past three decades owing a debt to this serial, it's still a cracking story with great art. The modern colouring is respectfully and artfully done, and while the bonus Warpsmith story is rubbish, I can cheerfully recommend the main story to fans of the real-life superhero subgenre this series spawned.

There are some flashes of early Alan Moore brilliance in here, but it mostly feels like a writer finding his voice. I'm hoping I enjoy the other volumes more.

Torture to read. Tropey, boring and flat. Sorry nerds. I hated it.

This is probably the best graphic novel I've ever read behind Watchman, also by Moore. The creativity he has in adapting a golden age comic to the present day and the story line were both great. I had a hard time getting into the last story about the Warpsmiths, but the first section was so good that I'm more than willing to forgive that (and perhaps I'll get more into it as I read further issues in the collection).
