This is another Newbery award winner that shouldn't have won it in my opinion. I really had to force myself to push through it as it was just not that interesting. I kept hoping the author would improve the storyline the further I got into the book but she didn't. It is basically a book about a lonely boy who is supposedly Incan royalty. That could have been a better subject to pursue rather than the emphasis on the care of the llamas and his life of deprivation. I'll agree with other reviewers and wonder what the committee was thinking not to make Charlotte's Web the winner. If any reader wants to learn a tiny bit about the life of the Incan people than go ahead and try this out otherwise I'd pass.

I'm just kinda shocked by this book. This is your sign to go and read or re-read books that you had on your childhood bookshelf. Maybe ones you never got the chance to read. There are some great stories out there. This taught me a lot about patience and dealing with disappointment in stride, all while going on a grand adventure through the Andes. Throw in some fuzzy llamas too! It's always great to have a few pals on your journey!

My 6th grader and I read this out loud as part of our homeschool curriculum and she loved it to pieces. It was very engaging, with plenty of rich details about the Incan people, the Andes mountains and Peruvian culture. The little mystery definitely kept us guessing. And of course the llamas were her favorite part.

I was a little confused at first. There was a lot of flowery language (in my opinion) I didn't really connect with any of the characters. It felt slow going and just about everyone talked in riddles. It didn't feel that everything wrapped up nicely. The traditions and other information about the Incas were interesting, and I did like the learning a bit about the Llamas.

This might be the first children's book we DNF'ed. It seemed extremely random, nonsensical, meandering, repetitive and awkward. It hints forever at some mystery, but ends with more weirdness than mystery. Nobody minded when I read the last 1/3 of the book by myself and told them that it wasn't worth slogging through the rest of it all together.

A slow, meandering but interesting book. Lots of good descriptions about how Cusi and Chuto live, but the plot is a little ungrounded, and the ending was a tad confusing. But an excellent and respectful look at Inca culture. So many llamas.

This one starts out very slow, but has a nice ending.
