Popsugar challenge #4 - A book you haven't read since high school
I read this one in my AP english class years ago, and was a re-read. Actually, honestly it was probably a first time "real" read through and first time was likely via sparknotes. I instantly wanted to know what someone's thoughts were about it from a veteran or active duty military would be. For me it is another world that I do not even pretend to understand, but am curious about none the less, and Mr. O'Brien's honest point of view was stark, and I appreciated both the realism, and also the strength it must have taken to pick at those old scabs, those buried war memories to write this story.

This is a tremendous piece of literature. Heavy, so heavy, and so expertly crafted. O'Brien's game is on point every way - from the stories themselves to the way he arranges them, from his larger messages about war and humanity to the perfect placement of individual words. We read this book in high school, but I wasn't really paying attention and it didn't hit me like it should have (sorry, Mr. Martin).
War touches me now in a place that didn't exist when I was a teenager, anyway. It worms into my soul and scrapes at the sides. It started with Slaughterhouse Five, Vonnegut and his Children's Crusade. Even now, all I can think about is how young they are.

Jumping from story to story in a world where truth isn’t the facts told but rather the feelings felt; O’ Brien brings Vietnam to life in this collection of short stories strung together by Alpha Company and its members.
I have never been a big fan of war stories, but this novel left me in awe. This may be, though, because of the fact that this really isn't a story about war. In reality, this is a novel about people who just happened to have served in the Vietnam War and the complex emotions and experiences they have. This is a text about stories and how they fuel the human existence. O'Brien's writing is extremely profound and his commentary about the human experience is even more so. This is definitely a novel that everyone should read because one can gain a lot of understanding about the human condition as well as more skills in the literary craft.
