Yes, 2018 appears to be the year that I read books that have been out for around 20 years now, as I'm really hip with the times. I just got done reviewing GMC: Goal, Motivation, and Conflict, a classic (yet now out of print) writing craft book. And now, just after we gave my mother in law Hard Core 24 for Christmas, I went way back in this series to the beginning. Why (you ask, talking to my review)? What is prompting this nostalgia for the late 1990s?

I've been doing some writing lately, and one writing resource recommended reading a Stephanie Plum book for a good example of a 'voicy first person narrator'. Well, now I know what a voicy narrator sounds like, and she's got a Jersey accent. Yes, I listened to this on Audiobook, and it was good. I'm glad I was listening, as most of my sitting down time lately I've spent on writing projects rather than reading, but this way I listened in the car and on the treadmill, and tried to refrain from calling birds 'boids' and otherwise adopting the Jersey accent.

As for the story, this is a solid 3 1/2, but I rounded up to four because it's iconic. I like Stephanie, but I did occasionally want to slap some sense into her. It was entertaining.

Not sure if I'll continue with this series as I have a huge backlist of books I'm trying to read right now, but I'm glad to finally be acquainted with it.

I forced myself to finish this book just because it was so short. All the good stuff happens in the end and i could not get over how naive and dumb the MC is. Definitely not a reread.

Stephanie Plum, my girl, you are a piece of work and I love that for you.

It's got everything you might want in a cozy: a snarky and relatable, slightly naïve protagonist, fast pacing, an intriguing plot, and a slew of fun side characters. This is a combination of multiple Melissa McCarthy movies, like The Heat meets Spy.

Despite being published in 1994, there weren't many instances of this book aging itself - except for the fashion and some of the descriptions of characters.
