Gilded Mountain gives us a look at life in the mining towns of Colorado in the early 1900s. Company towns, robber barons, strike breakers, and dangerous working conditions are the unfortunate norm in Moonstone. We get to see the life of both the haves and the have-nots through the eyes of Sylvie Pelletier, a 17 year old who moves to the mountain town when her father takes a job at the marble quarry. Her journey is not only a coming of age, but an education of the injustices of this world. I especially liked the Colorado setting and enjoyed researching the real-life events and people who were the inspiration for this book.

Book Review…Gilded Mountain by Kate Manning
Gilded Mountain is set in Moonstone, Colorado, a mining town and is a story about Sylvie Pelletier as she recounts her life and the effects of effects of slavery on the Grady family and the work of Mary Harris "Mother" Jones and of the difficult lives of workers and their struggles against the owners of the mines.
There were a few great characters in this book! Sylvie is the main character and when we start she is a young woman wanting to do what's right and follow her heart and by the end of the story she has grown into an adult who took charge of her life! Mary Harris Jones wasn't someone I was familiar with but she was another amazing woman! Not accepted as a journalist because she was a woman and she started her own paper. She was a lively character!
This book is beautifully written, with rich details that pull you in and make the characters and their lives truly come to life! It's not based on actual events but it is still rich with history. As a reader you can't help but feel the emotions of the people. It's a great historical fiction story about family, justice and equality with some amazing characters and a little bit of romance! Thank you Scribner Books and Kate Manning for sharing this wonderful story with me!

I didn't expect to like this. It seemed like it might be boring or not my thing. But the main character Sylvie was the best, I loved her! Not always making good decisions and getting into lots of trouble but wow, what a story!
While this didn't earn top marks for me, I did genuinely enjoy it. The story was unpredictable and interesting albeit a little too long. Based on historical events, this novel centers a poor young woman and her family who uproot their quiet lives of piety in Vermont to move to the unsettled frontier of Western Colorado. Her father is a miner in a quarry who is seeking to unionize his colleagues. The woman gets involved romantically with the son of the quarry owner who has all kinds of connections to wealth and power. The woman proves to be incredibly courageous, working for justice alongside the union. It's worth a read, just prepare for a lengthy build-up.
Heavy setting and lots of heartache but a well done story about the hard life working for mines in the Wild West in the early 1900s. Reminds me of Kristin Hannah and The Four Winds. A story of survival, love and trying to do the next right thing in a world swirling with fear, hate and greed.
This story is told in first person by Sylvie, a seventeen-year-old girl who has traveled with her Quebecois family to Moonstone, Colorado in 1907 to join her father who works as a machinist for a stone quarry. It tells of the hardships of the mineworkers and the excesses and ignorance of the quarry owners, but most of all it is the story of a young girl learning about life and love and the unfairness of the world. I enjoyed the setting and the depictions of early union workers and the life of the mineworkers and other working classes as well as the insights into the racial tensions of the times.
However, I found myself frustrated with the young girl who is portrayed as a brave newswriter for a female operated paper that tells the “truth” in direct opposition of the local newspaper put out by the Company sycophants. Sylvie spent more time mooning over Jace, the drunken doddering Padget heir, than she did being a strong female protagonist. I tired of listening to her mouth off in her head to all the deserving authorities but when push came to shove, she just kept her mouth shut and went about her business doing her best not to make waves while she waited for her love interest to do something.
Recommended to readers who enjoy coming-of-age stories about females making their way in the historical American West.

Some lovely writing, interesting time period and setting, but ultimately I felt let down by the turgid love story.
