A great tense mystery. Aaronovitch keeps the detective work fresh, this time dealing with kidnapped children instead of the classic murder. And the humor is still that great dry British style.
This book takes us out of london, and in doing so peels back the curtains on more of the magical world, spending more time with the creatures and lore than previous books do, which I found both a highlight, and an effective way to build tension and mystery.
We also get a few teases at the story of the faceless man, though that isn't the main focus of this book.
I liked the story as a whole, but the ending felt particularly abrupt and left a lot of loose ends (though I'm sure some of those will be addressed in the following novels).
Overall, I recommend, and am excited for the next!

I just love these books! The characters are rich, the stories well developed, the magical and mundane weaves together perfectly....Peter is clever and witty and coming into his own as a constable and as a wizard. I enjoy the clever little references to other books/ pop culture -- especially when JK Rowling or Harry Potter gets brought up. I also find it refreshing - and challenging in a great way - that the books aren't "translated" or dumbed down in any way, leaving all the British terms and references. It makes them feel authentic and makes the world building even richer. SO GOOD!!
This series gets better each tune I read one of these. So much wit used and Beverley and Pete seem quite good together. Too many funny tongue in cheek moments. You simply have to read for yourself

Only reading it si like because I was thoroughly confused the whole bookš©SO many characters introduced and referenced from past books makes it really hard to keep up.
This is the latest book in the Peter Grant series. I'm now completely up to date and will have to wait until November (possibly) for the next book. It's a different change in pace from the other books. The focus is not on the Faceless Man plot, which for the previous three books has dominated. Its like a breather in the series, a chance for the characters and reader to catch their breath after everything which happened in Broken Homes.
Overall its less plot driven. The focus instead is on the characters, and allows for some character development which hasn't really occurred since the first book. We get to see Peter out on his own, without the support of Nightingale or Lesley to tell him when he is doing something stupid. More is revealed about Peter and his childhood, which appears to have been rather unhappy, providing some explanation to elements of his personality. And while Lesley is gone (I'm still traumatised), Beverley is back (yay). I'm hoping she'll be sticking around for the next book.
