First of all I want to say that I am truly sorry that the author is suffering from the disease. No one should have to go through that, and I wish her all the best. That does not mean, however, that I won't be honest in my review of this book.
It is terrible. It is a compilation of cliches, and it becomes unintentionally hilarious because of all the stereotypes in it. Kaiden has no personality at all. He is also unable to communicate without growling. My eyes hurt so much because I rolled them every time it said he growled... it is a miracle they aren't stuck in my skull.
The writing is bad. The same words are repeated again and again, and it felt so immature. Then there was this that had me in stitches. "Exter High is a hunting ground," he says quietly, stepping closer. His tone drops. "I've seen bad things happen to people like you all the time. I do what I can to keep the predators away, but they're around and they love fresh meat."
The characters are so flat. Like Emery she is only reduced to her illness, there is nothing else to her and she is so incredibly dumb! but she also comes off as such an unlikable character that has such a holier than thou attitude. Kaiden again is the personification of every wattpad fanfic boyfriend out there complete with his growling. The parents are walking stereotypes and so badly handled. The only thing I'll say is good is the fact that Kaiden asks for consent with Emery. Um... so they got each other off next to her sister's grave... How lovely.
I also just have to point out how distasteful the fact is that the author uses other books in her stories to build up Emery as an intellectual - also mentioning My sister's keeper was not a sneaky nod to the ending... it was spelling it out in capital letters - while constantly bashing down on other characters. The bashing of female characters in this that wasn't Emery made me uncomfortable. There was a lot of slut shaming, and dismissing of girls who did not like to read books.. or the right type of books. It's funny that the author constantly bashes Twilight when her writing is on a par with Twilight. Oh, hubris, you rear your ugly head!

Spoiler
she has watched her sister die of the same illness. She knows the signs, yet she ignores them until it is too late to do anything to prevent her demise... smartI also just have to point out how distasteful the fact is that the author uses other books in her stories to build up Emery as an intellectual - also mentioning My sister's keeper was not a sneaky nod to the ending... it was spelling it out in capital letters - while constantly bashing down on other characters. Pain. The whole book i was mentally preparing myself for the ending but I WASNT READY.
In the end, she dies of Lupus and is burried next to her sister Lo, who had died of the same illness years ago. Kaiden goes to the university he wanted to and his mother sends him the jar with all the drawings he had made to her, as well as some she had drawn to him.
Beautifully written. A bit of a taboo-romance. Made me cry.
This book was amazing, I fell in love with the characters from the start. The book made me feel all of the feelings it needed to. Good read to finish in one day.
Although I feel this book was probably geared towards a younger audience, I enjoyed it and felt it did a good job addressing the issues of those dealing with chronic diseases
