Where do i even start, from the first sentence of the book i knew i was going to love it. This is my first book by this author and it won’t be my last. i love every single chapter of this book. The way they understood and supported each other??? ugh a great read
Oliver was part of a musical brother duo Alex and Oliver until one night after a terrible car accident, Alex ends up dead.
Emery is a single mother bartender who is barely scraping by when one evening she realizes that the very drunk man in the bar is Oliver, who has skipped his comeback concert to get drunk at the bar.
What happens next is a beautiful story about how two people try to shift through their own tragedies and learn to rely on each other while dealing with all the issues that life presents to them.
Emery is a type of character who has built a shield to protect not only her piece but also to make sure the world is safe for her daughter Reese. She is strong but puts everyone's elses needs in front of her own. We see throughout the novel why Emery built those walls and the extent she has gone in order to protect her people.
This book talked about grief in the beginning in ways I have not read before. Grief is a roller coaster and there was something soothing about Oliver's journey in the beginning to navigate this new world without his brother who was such a big part of his life. This book made me cry during some parts but I found it beautiful to see how Oliver and Emery both opened up to each other and built a beautiful friendship that turned into such a beautiful love story. I also really enjoyed Reese and every time she said "Mr. Mith".

Loved this one! Not sure why it isn't getting more attention, but a great read.
Breathtakingly beautiful. The love story that ensues between Emery and Oliver is nothing short of perfection. The all-consuming grief that we connect with is utterly heartbreaking. This has easily become one of my favorite books. I read it in one sitting and felt completely catapulted in their world. What a beautiful story showing the significance of family, love, second chances, and grief. The quotes in here were so beautiful and enduring. I teared up various times and smiled harder than I do with most books! Absolutely brilliant!
wanted to like this so bad but kept wanting to dnf and move on. the story felt rushed and the dialogue was so cheesy,, also the fmc’s daughter never acted like a five year old. she had all this old wisdom and said the right things and just never acted like a child idk
Trying to comprehend what I just read is going to be hard to put into words. But I’m going to try.
I don’t think I have ever felt so connected to another character like Oliver in a long time. Most of his inner most thoughts and feelings felt like having someone take what was inside my head and put it into words. Everything he went through was absolutely traumatic and heartbreaking.
Emery is the epitome of a beautiful human being. I don’t even know where to start. Her courage and strength was so inspirational. I can’t even begin to imagine what it must have been like to grow up the way she did. With the back-flashes from 5 years ago, it helped put things into perspective but my God, just that little bit was absolutely awful.
Emery and Oliver came together when they both needed it most without realizing it. Their connection was obvious from the first interaction. I couldn’t get enough and was completely enraptured with their story.
I’ve only felt this emotionally connected to characters and a story with very few authors. Anything by Colleen Hoover and some others and now Brittainy Cherry. Thank you for writing this story. I didn’t want to put it down and wanted to soak up every single detail. I was absolutely blown away.

I enjoyed the relationships and characters in the book but at one point it went from PG-13 to very firm R rating very suddenly. It seemed out of place for the characters, for the writing, and for the story up until that point. It was a shock—I’m not saying this from the point of a prude, either. The abrupt shift in tone and approach to the story is what lost it a star for me. It wasn’t cohesive, almost like another author took over that scene.
Couldn’t put it down
This book gives you everything. It’s a roller coaster ride, and in the best possible way. Oliver and Emery are 1000% relationship goals. Oh, and have a tissue ready. You’ll need it.

The Mixtape by Brittainy Cherry - Rating: 5/5⭐️
Since the death of his twin brother and bandmate, Oliver is lost. Stuck between pleasing his fans or the blackness that has the hold on himself. Leading to a drunken night in bar where he meets Emery. A single mother bartending to make ends meet. He could’ve ended up needing saving from any bar, but he stumbled into hers. Turning her life upside down in more aspects than just her job life.
LIKES:
👍🏾 The characters had a genuine quality with individuality and complex backgrounds. Even though Oliver was a famous musician, it didn’t have the cliche “rockstar” romance that normally follows these kinds of books. And Emery had her own identity outside of just being “the single mother”.
👍🏾 Absolutely adored the bond that was formed between Emery, Oliver, and Reese. They were hilarious, but also real in their pain and struggles. And I thought the two broken souls in different aspects coming together to heal each other in the romance was done exceptionally well. their connection was undeniable. I’m glad that it was a slow burn with all of the struggles that they had. It was a refreshing mature flourishing of a relationship that needed some individual growth.
👍🏾 This book dug deep into the emotions. Between the generational curses, religious backgrounds, expectations, familial ties, and hard events. But most of all the twists. I had literal chills when the big reveal around Reese came in. I could see how some can call it, but I had no idea and it threw me for a loop (in a good way). And I couldn’t help but lean on my own experience as a young mom with an older sister who was the only person there to support me for a little while. Drawing me even more into the book.
DISLIKES:
👎🏾 I could’ve done without pretty much all of the ex-girlfriend parts. It added a bit to the whole take Reese away thing, but didn’t really contribute enough for me. But thankfully they were small parts.
Overall, I understand why my girl Sami is Brittainy Cherry’s biggest fan.
