Okay, here me out, this isn’t usually my jam when it comes to books. The romance and all.
But this just got to me, by the end I was in tears.
This was such a beautiful story about love, recovery, pain, resiliency. The stars aligned for two very different complicated people, and all because Oliver walked into a bar and found Emery.
Honestly I wish we had more of an insight of what happened after Alex was born and if Reese ever found out who here biological mom was.
I was SO surprised that I enjoyed this.

Oh, how I love me some Brittainy Cherry. I knew I was going to love this book. I loved both Oliver's and also Emery's personal stories. I also loved that it was a slowburn story. They really built their relationship on the basis of friendship and mutual respect before they gave attention to their physical attraction.

I chose The Mixtape by Brittany Cherry for an Amazon First Pick because I have heard a lot about her but haven’t had the opportunity to read one of her books.
All I can say is that I’m extremely happy that I choose The Mixtape.
Through telling the story about Oliver and Emery, Brittany showed how healing isn’t always pretty and it’s never easy. Some days are great and some days are terrible. In the end it is all worth it for though. And life is made up of good moments and bad moments but together they are a person’s story….or mixtape.
There were so many quotable lines that could help a person who was struggling. I’d definitely suggest The Mixtape to a person who needed help on a cloudy day.

3.5, the love, the heartbreak, the musician of it all.. delish!!! found families forever
This was really fun and great. I have never read anything of this author before but I will for sure be reading more!
This book has been on my TBR since I got it from Amazon First Reads well over a year ago. I am disappointed in myself for taking so long to finally pick it up.
Emery and Oliver meet when they are both at rock bottom. Emery has $12 to her name and is 2 months late on rent. Oliver is drowning his sadness from losing his twin brother by getting plastered every night. On the night they meet, Oliver is supposed to do his first solo performance since his brother, Alex, passed away six months prior. Instead, due to his social anxieties that he faces, he goes to a dive bar and gets wasted. Emery, the only bartender, notices exactly who Oliver is, as she has been a lifelong fan of Alex & Oliver, the band.
When angry fans come to the bar and recognize Oliver, Emery does everything that she can to get a wasted Oliver out of sight. She brings him home to hide away and sleep off the alcohol. The next day Oliver wakes up and doesn't remember anything from the night before. But when Emery, Reese (Emery's daughter), and Oliver are walking out, he overhears her landlord reminding her about the rent being due. Feeling awful about the night before, Oliver calls over to the bar and finds out that Emery has been fired. He knows it was because of him and knows that he needs to do something.
Oliver offers Emery a job, anything she wants to do for him, and that is just the beginning of the life change that will happen for both Oliver and Emery. Both of them are dealing with some serious demons and they help each other heal. I just loved seeing their friendship blossom and eventually turn into something else. They both found each other at their lowest point and turned that into something so beautiful.
This book was really wonderful. I highly recommend to anyone and everyone! Please beware of some trigger warnings: rape, alcohol use, death of a loved one
One last parting words: Fuck Emery's parents. They are the WORST people ever. Especially her father.

Beautiful Romance by Brittainy Cherry
"everyone’s life story is a mixtape, and each track is a chapter of their life. Some chapters are happy, and others are sad, but they are all entangled to create that person’s mixtape.” What a great concept. What a fantastic book. It's angsty and romantic. I loved the vulnerability and depth of both main characters and the focus on mental health. This book left a real impression on me. It's dual POV, with two short steamy scenes. Lots of emotions! Bring your outrage and tissues. Wow!

I'll tell you what...this was one emotional roller coaster that did not give my heart a moment to breathe! This story is heartbreaking on so many levels, but it also highlights breaking those generational curses along with the ups and downs of personal growth and healing.

The villains of the story had my blood boiling, as to be expected, but my god--they're pretty damn awful guys!
Reese stole my heart the minute she presented herself. Children who are innocently sarcastic assholes are my absolute favorite and she definitely hit the snark mark. She had me laughing out loud while simultaneously pulling at my heartstrings.

There was one part that I'm still kinda confused about....
I will say, the narrations were just *okay*. It fell a little bit flat for me at times, but it didn't deter away from delivering the powerful punches of the story. All and all wonderful story and I def recommend it!!

Spoiler
so did Oliver and Emery not remember meeting each other five years prior? Or am I tripping? It's mentioned by both of them as a flashback...yet neither of them had the ah-ha moment. Especially when Emery is all like "this isn't how I pictured meeting my idol for the first time"*scratches head in confusion*I will say, the narrations were just *okay*. It started off good but then got SO predictable in the end and boring. Loved the male lead tho
AMAZON EDITORS CHOICE – BEST ROMANCE
Brittainy has delivered all the feels with this book again! I was a bit sceptic when I first picked it up and started reading, but I was more than pleasantly surprised that it was just as good as her previous books. This book is sort of a second chance / first love kind of book. This book addresses significant loss in life, death, depression, weird religion, forgiveness, sexual assault and unconditional love.
I would not rank this book her best romance, but it is a closely ranked.
QUOTES : “Healing doesn’t walk a linear line; it takes the messy route. I believe that healing comes during both the dark days and the bright ones. It’s not all rainbows. Sometimes healing means slicing open the scars that made you hurt so much before and examining them to fully understand yourself. Why did the cut hurt you in the past? How did it change you into who you are today? What can we learn from the pain of your yesterdays to better your tomorrows?”
