funny informative inspiring reflective fast-paced

Fab title, love the premise but it does not deliver any thoughtful exploration about power and relationships and dealing with patriarchy. 30% of this is just Roberson quoting other writers, TV shows, books etc.

It's more like a series of diary entries that focus on specific inspiration rather than a cohesive story about dating - it jumps all over the place and never really makes a point. It's occasionally funny, but mostly really repetitive. Super curious how the publishing process works when you get product like this.

DID NOT FINISH

Unfortunately, I am in the same boat as many other people who have reviewed this book. I was very impressed by the title and the summary made me feel as if I would enjoy the book. However, I was proven wrong shortly after chapter one. I am younger than Roberson, and even I know that many of her encounters with men are not "flings, boinks, or bangs". She has had genuine relationships with people but for lack of emotional satisfaction has chosen to not recognize them as such. I made it about 40% through the book before realizing that I could not continue reading the way she childishly treated relationships. So sad to read. I usually try to finish books regardless of how bad they are, but I was forced to finish.
funny lighthearted

The most interesting parts were the one in which she would cite other authors or artists.
Too many "hot men.." phrases

The author is funny, and the writing was clever. I definitely found the more thought out sections really funny. However, there’s basically zero tying of her own experiences to systemic oppression of women except for some scattered statistics that are frankly hardly ever cited (like.... that’s fucked up to not cite work that isn’t yours). Maybe I didn’t understand what this book was before reading it, but it made it hard to enjoy. She also posits every “theory” as one of her own making & doesn’t cite studies that I know exist that prove the points she writes about. I’m mainly thinking of the men living longer/getting more benefits from marriage & men claiming more often than women that their partners are their best friends/closest confidants but I’m sure there are others.

But my entire opinion on this book is summed up with being incredibly confused by how little self awareness the author has of the way her thoughts come across in over 300 pages. There’s really very little thoughtfulness in how she builds a sentence, paragraph, section, chapter, or the whole book. She would often undo her own “original” thesis within the span of 3 paragraphs. Also, she claims we don’t need more “white hetero media” but yet.... wrote this book..?

I highlighted a bunch a stuff that made me laugh

Damn, I had high hopes for this book based on its title and was disappointed. I LOVED the intro and then the rest just fell flat. I read half of it and then skimmed the second half when I realized I was still not into it beyond page 100. I’m all for books that are funny, but this one just felt like it was trying too hard to be funny and not actually funny. I don’t know. I can’t really put my finger on it, it just wasn’t for me.
