I personally thought this book was trying to tackle too many things at once. It got kind of confusing and I just didn’t really enjoy reading it. But the overall story was interesting.

Loved the cultural immersion into Chinese Malaysian life. Struggled through the stressful/high anxiety family interactions. Wished I could have seen an illustration or picture of Jess's new blonde haircut with an undercut - hottie alert!
This was well written. The characterisation of Jess and her grandmother was especially strong. I loved Jess's relationship with her parents and all the complexity it contained, and I enjoyed seeing her underhand more about her mother's background.
The story moved quickly for the most part, but sometimes Jess didn't seem to grasp the seriousness of the situation. There were a few moments that vicerally described a violent or dangerous situation where the tone was clearly quite serious. This took me by surprise because the rest of the book had a lighter tone, and perhaps I (like Jess) blindly assumed that everything would work out.
I did find myself wanting a bit more resolution from the ending, especially in terms of Jess's relationship with her parents and her personal direction. The events of this novel could have a large impact on her self-concept and relationship with her culture so I wanted some window into how she was grappling with all the questions that arose throughout this book. I felt unsatisifed with how quickly this wrapped up.

This was such a pleasant surprise. I picked this up because it was available on the libby app when I was frantically searching for something to download before a flight. I have never heard anyone talk about this book before.
The characters felt complex and well thought out, the plot was captivating, the magic system interesting.
I will be hunting down other books by this author.
