This took me too long to finish and really it was only finished because I was determined to get there.
I found this hard to get into and then it also didn't really go anywhere. I found myself skipping parts because I was finding it boring or paced weirdly.
I did like learning about the culture and religion, but that was its only saving grace.

this book was very different from what i expected it to be. i can’t really elucidate because i don’t want to spoil anything but it was a lot less comic that i was anticipating. it was, in fact, quite melancholy and upsetting at times. it was also meaningful, in reading about the passing of a family member, even one you don’t necessarily know that well.
i enjoyed it a lot, and i would recommend it, but before reading i would recommend looking up content warnings because there’s some pretty heavy shit in here, aside from the obvious death. but yeah, well written, enjoyable and zen cho is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors.
as mentioned in my review of spirits abroad, i find the religion, spirituality and mythology of other cultures intensely interesting and cho always does so well at integrating these elements into her novels. very impressive, love learning about it!

pretty interesting plot & concept, i enjoyed the book & the resolution. i didn’t really connect with the characters at all, and the development felt a little rushed (despite the book being so long) so i got kinda confused. i’m not sure i’d recommend it but i definitely enjoyed it tho

Somehow this book was exactly like the description and yet not at all what I expected. I’m really at 3.5 stars.

Essential has an uncanny gift for place and voice. I loved her Sorcerer to the Crown books and Black Water Sister is as vivid while being completely different. This is a book about the boxes we put ourselves in out of fear. It is tense and never pulls a punch. But it's also funny and tender. If you are in the mood for a ghost story with a closeted protagonist mixed with organized crime in Malaysia, this is for you.

Enjoyed this a lot! thought the writing style was engaging and the audio performance was very good. I am into a modern-fantasy 'what do you mean ghosts are REAL' type of thing and i enjoyed the main character's family dynamics being revealed to her at the same time as us. good ghost story
