As a supposed mystery book there needed to be more of a mystery

Every time Ruth opened her mouth, I wanted to slap her in the face.

Not the sort of book I usually read but I watched the film years ago and it stuck with me, so I wanted to try the book, and I'm glad I did. The style of prose isn't my usual preference but I loved it, and the resigned and bittersweet feeling to the narration was really beautiful despite its simplicity. Ruth was more than a little frustrating, and focus on her did impact my enjoyment slightly at some points. But overall it more than lived up to what I hoped this book would be, and I'd strongly recommend it.

I kept waiting for this book to really hit me emotionally but for some reason I just couldn’t get there. Perhaps the characters just weren’t enough for me? I’m not entirely sure- the concept is fascinating, no doubt about that.  And the love triangle plot has real potential.  The ending makes sense.  All the pieces are there but for some reason it just didn’t resonate with my heart like I thought it would. A bit of a bummer!
