Fanatical religious tripe. I cannot believe I stuck with this. It read like a grocery list for those he'll bent on expounding the morality and great goodness of the Christian cause. The whole thing came across a bit like an overly verbose and pompous sermon from some evangelistic brainwashed zombie.

This went beyond survival. First, It seems as though they killed everything just because. Second, who are the “savages” they keep mentioning? Third, all the food they found growing on the island did not miraculously appear there.

(Not sure if I had this ISBN or not.)
Having read a rewritten version of this story as a child, I decided I wanted to read the whole thing. And - well - maybe it's better in the original German. Unfortunately, I found it a little stilted, rather unbelievable, and just not as good as the rewritten version. I still suggest that everyone be familiar with this story - it is exciting, and definitely fun; however, I would suggest going with a less faithful translation, and possibly an entirely rewritten tale.

Read as part of the program suggested by the writing program (Writing With Ease) I'm using to homeschool my kiddo. Read because it is "a classic." Not the greatest book ever, and with some casual racism and colonialism that felt very icky. But some of it was quite fun - the story of a shipwrecked family surviving and even thriving on a small unknown island, finding all sorts of exploitable natural resources . . . Hmmm . . .

A shipwrecked family on a deserted island, and there is now doubt that they will survive and flourish. Johann D. Wyss is a master story teller and keeps the pace of his story moving. Although somewhat dated (e.g. daily religions activity; a woman's role - "the mother"; killing animals happens often for various reasons). Most of the dated items can be easily explained. I feel certain that it fairly portrayed what life would have been like if shipwrecked in 1800's.
The reading was not especially easy, and sent me to the dictionary more than once (e.g. onager) and I'm sure that it was the first time I have ever seen the word rigmarole in print.

I really enjoyed the ending, but I didn't care much for the rest of the book. It wasn't so much about a family surviving on a deserted island after a shipwreck, but more about a family getting stranded on a deserted island and taking over the place. Seriously, what they didn't kill they domesticated. I found it a very tedious and often frustrating read.

The dad is a know-it-all. There’s no way there would be that much diversity on a deserted island—plants and animals. “Let’s just enslave everything that crosses our path,” um, no thank you. And, randomly, a chick shows up to perpetuate the species. Just, no. I don’t care that this is a very old book. I wanted it to be better

3 stars for nostalgia, otherwise it was a bit too fantastical for me and was difficult to suspend belief for very long when every few minutes a new animal from a completely different part of the world showed up.
