“To me, the one basking in infinite glory is you; the one fallen from grace is also you. What matters is ‘you’, and not the state of you.”
Xie Lian (谢怜) is the Crown Prince of the kingdom of Xian Le and a god who has ascended (and been banished) twice in a span of 800 years. After his 3rd ascension, he meets a mysterious youth who is actually the ghost king, Hua Cheng (花城), in disguise. Together, they embark on a journey to solve many mysteries plaguing the 3 realms (ghost, human and heavenly realm).
What a roller coaster ride! 天官赐福 (Heaven Official’s Blessing) is Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s (墨香铜臭) 3rd novel. It is an epic, behemoth (word count 1,144,742!) of a BL xianxia story serialised on JJWXC in 2017. Divided into 5 parts, books 1, 3 and 5 narrate the present, while 2 and 4 reveal Xie Lian’s past.
I ADORE MXTX’s writing. It is elegant yet witty and humorous. I read this accompanied by a dictionary because my Chinese is not that great. I also referred to the English fan translation from time to time to speed up my reading. Can’t wait for the official English translation!
The story is steeped in Chinese mythology and folklore, particularly in terms of deities and ghosts. What I found interesting was that MXTX hardly used any known deities but had instead established a fictional heavenly realm helmed by Jun Wu (君吾) instead of the Jade Emperor (玉帝).
The plot is wildly intricate and the twists and turns utterly mind-blowing. I think MXTX has a real knack for writing mind-boggling dilemmas where there are no clear options. Her characters are just stuck in horrific circumstances. And the way the story unravels is just truly heart-wrenching.
This is also an epic love story. Hua Cheng’s love and unflinching devotion to Xie Lian is clear as day; the sacrifices he made and the length he goes to help Xie Lian is indescribable. And in turn, Xie Lian is hardly able to deny Hua Cheng pretty much anything. These two!
While reading this, the animation OST kept looping in my mind.
Thank you MXTX, for bringing me yet on another epic ride through your fantasy world filled with joy and sorrow, pain and suffering, love and hate.

Best thing i’ve ever read this year. Hualian inventer love. Hua cheng terbucin
Many words come to mind for this book: epic, tragic, heartwrenching, funny, romantic... the author really outdid herself.
I can understand people not fond of the genre would pass on it, but I truly loved every second of the 244 (plus extras!) chapters.
