Having listened to this, it was hard to keep up with the pivots. It was followable until it wasn’t and then…it was quickly over. So, underwhelmed.
This was well written, but I just didn't like the story. And knowing Apocalypse Now was based on the story, all I could think of was Marlon Brando in the movie.

I can appreciate that this is a classic piece of literature that has a lot of allegory and political/social commentary baked in. That said, I found this rather short book generally unenjoyable and really hard to get through. While I can appreciate Conrad’s writing style and the fact that he was actually commenting on the flaws of colonialism, I could not get past the overt racism and misogyny of the time that was prevalent throughout this book.

Is this one of those books that you can say you "liked"? I'm not sure about that one, but I would recommend to book to others and I think its an interesting book to read to understand the relationship between Europeans and Africans. Or at least to understand the relationship from the eyes of the European. Plus, its a must read for anyone that watches "Apocalypse Now."

Earlier this year I read ' the shadow line' by Conrad and I loved it! I read it in less than 24 hours and I was looking forward to pick up a new book from the same author. I was expecting so much from the ' Heart of darkness', his masterpiece! I am deeply disappointed. I didn't like any of the characters, any little detail of how the story evolve. I still cannot understand how is possible since the two books are set in the same world and tell a similar story. Anyhow I will suggest to go for the 'shadow line' if you want to approach Conrad.
Beautiful language (except all the "n-words")and dark and haunting imagery. A strange and exotic tale.
Genuinely fantastic performance of this short novel by Kenneth Branagh. I thought at first he has speaking too hastily, but the choice makes sense, and injects a sense of urgency and emotion into the tale. Hard of course not to hear Brando’s voice in Kurtz’s final words too.
