3.75 AVERAGE

As compared to the movie, which I do love, the girls in the novel are more than simple caricatures of a shy artist, confused "ethnic" girl, sexy jock, and surly weirdo. They are multi-faceted and explore more than just a single dimension of love as is portrayed in the film. In their own ways, they come to know the love of family, friends, love interests, and, above all else, self. And although appearing superficial at first, Brashares peppers each character's thoughts and actions with truthful insecurities like boy and body issues that so many adolescent girls regularly experience.

Not my thing. I was a bit surprised because friends have read and enjoyed this but it turns out it's not for me. Some YA books still hold the interest of an older audience but this didn't. The writing was simple for my taste and yet the characters were all wise beyond their years in a very unappealing way. Nothing was nuanced. If you somehow didn't grasp the growth in the story, no worries: the author explained it clearly within a few sentences. (WITH the one glaring exception of Bee's experience, which altogether irked me and felt unbelievable.) Actually, many of the circumstances and characters felt too contrived and unbelievable. Kind of hated Bee's entire story line. Kind of thought the concept of the pants was dorky. Kind of didn't buy into the whole 4 besties closeness. Never felt the bonding. Maybe the movie is better but I won't be finding out. Between 2 and 3 stars.

I actually enjoyed this more than I expected to. It was silly and easily digestible fun, a perfect example of a 'coming of age' YA book that doesn't try to be more than it is, but also doesn't patronise the reader.

The plot line is simple - four teenage girls are separated over summer break for the first time ever and have various adventures, while using the 'travelling pants' to stay connected as they ship them back and forth between one another. It really is just a book about friendships, learning to be independent, making mistakes and making amends for them, and growing up. The writing style was simple, but not simplistic. It would be the perfect read while on summer school holidays.

FOUR VERY DIFFERENT FRIENDS. ONE PAIR OF MAGICAL PANTS. AND A VERY EXCITING READ.

I flew through this book which I found odd since I'm in a reading slump but this book changed that. I really enjoy books about friendship and I've been wanting to read this one for a long time and of course I grew up watching the movie. The movie was a tad different but the essence wasn't changed. This book really captures the spirit of friendship, these girls have such different personalities and are girls that you would never think would be friends but they have this bond and the pants just made it stronger. Their first summer apart was filled with a lot of obstacles and things we could actually see in our day to day lives and I think a teenage girl could really relate and take a lot from reading this. I loved how the pants symbolized each girl throughout the summer and how each of them felt when they had them. My favorite character would have to be Lena just because I feel like I could relate a lot to her introvert personality and just the fact that she went to Greece made it 100% better. Carmen is another character I related to but not personality wise, it was more of her story that i felt attached to. Overall Im really excited to continue on with the series and see what more adventures are in store.

- the thing that sucks about early 2000s girly books like this is the huge emphasis on body and weight like omg no wonder yall were really going thru it back then bc???

- i keep imaging these r uni girls but theyre like in grade 11 lmfao

- so many descriptors of fat and being big, RELAX! Idk if i read this as a kid but damn i imagine so many young girls did?? This is crazy

- these girls r 15 im so scared, this has become too kiddy for me

- this is heading into im in love with my stepbrother territory and im getting scared. Hopefully it proves me wrong

- the girl in greece who got seen skinny dipping and had everyone assume he raped her is really starting to piss me off. How about stop letting that idea fester even more and correct everyone that he disnt actually do that???? Hello????

- the only girl that isnt annoying me atp is the one back home w the leukemia girl lmfao

ok finished this book at work (it was my work book lol) and meh im giving it 2 stars but not because i hate it but because it's just not for me and i recognize that. u can tell this is clearly for teen girls but even then its hmmm bc of the implied sexual content. hearing the girls were all like 15 had my jaw drop bc no way?? lena the greece girl just casually changing her flight back home to go see her friend is the funniest thing ever like what 15 y.o. is doing that? same goes for carmen the father girl who just took a bus home. maybe im just underestimating kids or maybe kids back then were just different. bee the sporty girl annoyed me so bad im ngl and this book would never have been published where a 15 year old is sleeping w a 20 year old???? BE SO SERIOUS!!! yeah i just hated everything that had to do with her. the only girl i really liked was tibby w the leukemia girl, i acc felt bad her bff and hamster died all in the same week. not sure how i see this book is a classic but i can see the teenage appeal, girls having something that they could connect with or character that they connect to is so important so im glad girls from the past had this. the book was short and had huge font lol so it was a quick read. for sure gonna be finishing this series and donating it after.

this sucks, it's pretty well just angsty teenage whining. Do not read if you actually value your self-respect.

One of my new years resolutions was to start writing reviews again..
I actually stopped a while ago because no one reads them .. but who cares I READ them isn't that enough? we all need an audience for our little shows , but I won't consider this a show, I'll take the reviews for what they are ..little pieces of me ,of my feelings and of the book of course.
So I set up the music for writing (which was a really lame idea ) and here I am.
I watched the movie adaption of this book a couple of years ago, and I just LOVED IT, it's one of my all time favorite movies, it captures friendship in such a magical way that it is so bittersweet to watch.
I've had a rough patch this last couple of days , and realized, that no matter how many friends I have , I couldn't rely on any of them,I wanted some time alone and felt at the same time so lonely , no one understood..
And this is what so beautiful about this book, a friendship I always wanted , unconditional love..
What I loved about this book , is that it's not a silly book,it has meaning ..
The girls are so different yet so close and united , together they make the perfect girl, and apart each one of them is perfectly able to have her own life, but together they're magical, just like the pants..

I don't know why I never read this series, but I really enjoyed it! Definitely gonna read the next one.

The book that started the magic. I loved the introduction of how the girls met, how they found the pants, and how the pants brought a bit of magic and shared love to the lucky girl next in line to wear it. Great setup, great writing, great stories.
