I couldn't get into this. I really like retellings and I really like the idea behind this series, but when the author killed off the sultan, i just couldn't. By the way, the sultan's name is Hamed Bobolonius.

DID NOT FINISH: 25%

25% in and the book is only now starting to be different from the movie.

One of the rules of fan fictions is to not just copy the source word for word, but to actually use it to create your own story. We really don’t need the book to give us beat for beat the first half of the movie. This isn’t a novelization of the movie, it’s suppose to be a “what if” story.

I’m  DNF-ing. This is too boring.

This retelling of Aladdin had a few surprises, but was a fairly predictable modernization of the story. Women’s rights, equal distribution of wealth, authoritarianism, the idle rich. As I said, few surprises.

i understand the complaints about how the first 20% of the book is just like the movie but at the same time it can’t be helped. the whole plot of the book can only occur if the first 20% of the book is the same as the movie so i really don’t mind.

the romance between jasmine and aladdin was really nice. they were super cute together and had the most adorable moments.

it was an fairly good book, it didn’t quite get me to love it but i do appreciate it.

there were many bold choices in the story that shocked me, including the sultan’s death & the world’s loss of magic. it won’t ever happen but i would read a story about the genie’s new life as a human.

I do tend to struggle with these books, I think. I feel like Disney content is at it's best in a film format, or at least certain content is. Especially given that I feel like this just doesn't change enought about the OG story for it to be worth getting called "twisted". This just feels like if the last few scenes of Aladdin were stretched out over the course of a whole book, and it just doesn't really work.

That being said, I do love most of the characters. Aladdin pisses me off but that goes for even the original version of him, but I especially liked Morgiana and Duban, they were very fun! There was also a good portion in the start/middle that was really enjoyable.

After a while, though, it just got really draining. It was like the same thing happened over and over again, then a slightly weird sentence about "voluptuous" dancers or something of a similar nature would happen, then it would go back to being repetitive again.

In theory, these could work so well. But so far out of the 2 I've read I think one of them has been too out-there and completely detached from the original source material and the other one (this one) is too close on a way that makes it boring.
