The first thing I noticed when reading the book is that the first 20% almost exactly follows the storyline of the Disney Aladdin which I guess inst surprising seeing as it is published by Disney but I was not expecting it to be so close to the "original". Everything down to the clothing, appearance, personalities of the characters and setting are exactly the same as the movie! At first I wasn't sure I liked it being exactly the same but it grew on me especially the similarities with Genie because I have such a huge love for Robin Williams and reading about his unique and animated character what so cool!!
This Disney so of course there was a bit of instalove between Jasmin and Aladdin but I think it was done much better than the movie it moved a bit slower but not much and the darker tone of the book added more depth to the relationship! Speaking of darker tone this book had a bunch of it I can't go to into detail because of spoilers but the characters deal with dark magic, death, and war in my opinion that made the story so much better! This was definitely young adult but it was much more mature than the Disney movie version.
Jasmin was such an awesome character because Jafar summons the genie and not Aladdin she takes center stage during most of the book and really steps up and becomes the leader Agrabah needs her to be.In the very beginning we get back story on Aladdins childhood and we find out how he became a street rat which I really enjoyed, we also get to see a lot about the other street rats in Agrabah and they move the story along nicely and add so much to the plot!!
Final Thoughts
I had so many high hopes for this book and it meet every single on of them!!I wish I could say all the things about this book but it would give so much away. Really the only reason I gave the a 4.5 star rating was because of some minor writing mistakes but since this was an ARC I wouldn't be surprised if those were fixed in the final edition of the book!

As the first in Disney’s Twisted Tale series, A Whole New World reimagines Aladdin with a dark twist: what if Jafar got the lamp first? While the premise is intriguing, the execution didn’t quite live up to its potential.
The writing leans heavily into a very young YA style—simple, repetitive, and lacking the emotional depth that could have elevated the story. The darker tone feels more surface-level than meaningful, and character development takes a backseat to plot mechanics.
It’s a quick read and may work for younger fans just starting to explore fantasy retellings, but it didn’t offer much beyond the novelty of the premise. A cool idea, but ultimately underwhelming.

I mean, I love the other books, but this one just ruined the whole world of Aladdin.
