Festive in Death

J.D. Robb

I always love visiting Eve and Roarke, especially at the holidays. Watching Eve get into the holiday party planning has to be one of my favorite scenes. Always worth it!

Another good installment. #39 and I'm still not bored with these characters :)

It may be 39 novels in but I adore the In Death series by JD Robb. She has created an amazing cast of core characters that every time they are on the page I fall a little more in love with them. Over the years the characters have been developed but none more than our heroine, Eve Dallas. As a kickass Lieutenant for the NYPD homicide division Dallas knows that every case, no matter how clear cut, is a tough one because it begins with a death. As she and her partner, the loveable Peabody, dive in to the life of personal trainer Trey Ziegler they find that almost no one is sorry he’s been murdered but Dallas will work hard to find him justice no matter her personal feelings. What made this such a fun read for me, the murder happens days before Eve and her husband Roarke throw their annual Christmas celebration, a night that Eve dreads because of her hatred for anything considered social. As Eve battles witnesses and evidence she’s also battling decorators, caterers, and gift purchases. I love the chance to see Eve so out of her element because she can master any suspect interview but can’t decide what to buy for her friends. A really fun story and I can’t wait to keep reading!

This is the thirty-ninth book of the In Death series (not including the novellas, which I haven't read). You would think I would have already gotten bored twentysomething books ago. But honestly, I still want more!

Eve and Roarke are my favorite book couple ever! Eve is my kind of heroine. She's strong, smart, loyal, and a badass cop through and through, but deep inside, she has a soft spot for the people she cares about. Roarke, on the other hand, will forever be my book boyfriend. He's Irish, ultrarich, the typical alpha male, and a reformed "bad boy" with the perfect body and longish hair, which he ties in a ponytail when he's hard at work. I mean, what's not to love about him? Nothing, I tell you!

Eve and Roarke have gone through a lot, and they have grown so much as individuals and as a couple since the first book. Actually, the whole gang has grown up and grown in number. So, even though each book in the series can be read as a standalone, I highly recommended that you read them in order, especially since the main characters' personal relationships continue to evolve in each installment.

To those who are wondering, there is romance. It's not the smutty kind of romantic suspense, but yes, there is romance. It's written by Nora Roberts, after all.

I love this series so much because it's well-written and hilarious, the characters are awesome, and the suspense aspect is actually not crappy at all. I also can't help but swoon over Eve and Roarke every.single.time! Their relationship and the deep and intense love between them leave a more long-lasting impression on me than any other NA couple—and that's saying a lot since I pretty much enjoy anything with a HEA.

So if you're looking for some romantic suspense, do try and meet Eve and Roarke and the rest of the gang.

I have to be honest, I was planning on giving this book 3 stars, but the "Epilogue" saved it. :)

Great book as always from Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb. I hate it when the DB is a douche of extreme measures because you can't really blame someone for offing him. However it makes up for it that the bitch who killed him is a douche herself although you wish the other living douche was guilty. Ah well when douche DB gets his comeuppance even for the wrong reasons and one bad moral-less soul gets it. I'm pretty sure the living douche will get his sooner or later.

This one was almost cozy - holiday parties, gift shopping and, horror of horrors, Trina and her multitude of beauty and hair enhancements. The star at the top of the tree? Murder. Eve Dallas and Roarke, along with the excellent Detective Peabody, close in on a case of absolute jerk as victim with so many possible killers it makes your head spin. Stellar narration by Susan Ericksen, as usual. I love her Peabody voice!

I LOVE this series. It never gets old. Eve may be worried that love has mellowed her but the holidays are guaranteed to bring out the cynic that we know and love. I love that Eve and Roarke are still slap silly in love with each other even as the real world intrudes on their bliss. Eve and the gang deal with the murder of a disgusting human being and still they fight for him with all the energy and commitment they would give any of their cases. Another case that will keep you guessing and turning page after page.

I do enjoy the Dallas series but feel as though each installment gets schmaltzy-er than the last. Being a Christmas special this is exaggerated to the point of saccharine, but hey its characters we know and love so let's put up with it for the season.

Meh.
