This was a fun young-adult novel set in an alternate reality where Edward VIII didn’t abdicate the throne of England to marry Wallis Simpson and his heirs are now the line of succession. The description made it seem that it was a mystery/thriller when it was definitely more of a drama. There was a central mystery but I wanted more, there wasn’t much until the end of the novel. The book spent more time on Evan coming to terms with being outed as being the kings daughter, her relationship with her half sister and other people at court. Although this book wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be, it was still an enjoyable read. I’ll definitely read the next book in the series, as I’m hopeful that this book was about set up and that the mystery will play a more central role in the next one.
I wanted everyone in Evan's life to be better. Thank God she has Tibby and Jenkins in her corner.
I think the absolute hatred that Maisey has for Evan is so overblown it was a little unbelievable. To blame someone for being born is insane especially when they are very clearly having a terrible time.
The mother of king also hating her granddaughter because she was a threat to the monarchy is abhorrent. Again Evan didn't choose to be born. I guess I hope that a real human in this situation would realize that the hating your granddaughter over this is unfair and mean.
Still it was a fun read and I enjoyed the murder element to the story. I think it elevated a otherwise well-trodden royal plotline of the illegitimate child finding out their royalty.
I will definitely read the second book when it comes out.
Helene should have had more consequences for ruining Evan's life by leaking things. That was so selfish and I want Maisie to find out and grow and be better than her mom.
Also Ben should have more consequences for taking the video and helping Jasper. And I REALLY DIDNT LIKE THE IDEA THAT BEING SENT TO KENYA WAS A PUNISHMENT. That was effed up.
Alexander should have done more to make things right with Evan and her mom, and the fact Helene had a c section when she heard Evan was being born should have been more concerning to him.
I do need Evan to have some interests or hobbies in the second book. She is a little flat. Caring and kind, but bland despite her sassy, sarcasm - default attitude.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this book.
Evan Bright is not just any 17-year-old girl. No, she's the daughter of the reigning king of England. The problem? No one knows. After she gets kicked out of boarding school (again) she goes to England in a last-ditched attempt to get to know the father who has been absent in her life.
I liked Evan as a character. I thought she was relatable. I did think a lot of the mystery of the book was easy to see coming, but I enjoyed the story so much that I didn't care. This was just a good, fun read that is thoroughly enjoyable!

The media and the family of the royal bastard gang up to make her life hell, but she gets through it. Once a potential love interest is killed, who is the killer, and who's trying to frame her?
This book was a good mix of dark/emotional and funny. I wish there were more of the fun parts and less of the dark and emotional parts. The book's first half felt more like a contemporary romance, but the second half was more of a thriller. I would have preferred less romance.
Overall a pretty good book that covered some hard topics. I really appreciated the compassion and understanding of the author for the mother who struggled with schizophrenia. I also liked that she made sure to have a part in there that corrected the assumptions of some of the general public that people with schizophrenia are violent, when in fact they're more likely to be the victim than the perpetrator of violence.
