Royal Blood marks the start of what seems to be a highly entertaining series and I’m grateful to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this prior to publication.
Our story focuses on Evan Bright, the seventeen-year-old illegitimate daughter of Alexander, the King of England. Evan has always known who her father is, but she has no relationship with him. After an unfortunate incident at her boarding school - having been excluded from many - Evan is forced to England where her father wants her to be.
A curious and very fraught experience. The majority of the Royal Family have no interest in her being there, and are determined to make things hard for her. Evan doesn’t want to be there either. However, when she is implicated in the murder of a well-known friend of the Royals she has to start relying on the very people she thought hated her.
It was great to see a character navigating the clearly unfamiliar territory with such gusto. Her situation really was a tough one, and she was put in some awful predicaments. The whole Royal Family setting was neither here nor there, but it served as a useful backdrop to examine our character against. The ending of the book also seemed to set up a very intriguing prospect for book two (due out in 2024).

From the very start, I was absolutely hooked on this book. I loved it so much that I can hardly wait to see where the series goes next - I need to know what happens right now!

The story takes place in an alternate UK and follows Evan Bright, the illegitimate daughter of the King of England. When she is forced to spend the summer with her estranged father and unsupportive royal family in London, her true identity is exposed to the world and the media frenzy that ensues puts her in the spotlight. This leads to a dangerous situation when she becomes the primary suspect in a murder investigation. As Evan fights to clear her name, she uncovers royal secrets that could change the monarchy forever.

Although the mystery was not very mysterious, as the details were revealed early on, I found Evan to be a deeply complex character. Her resilience and depth made her a fascinating protagonist, especially in the chapters where she pieces together her relationship with her mother. I felt that it was written very realistically and with a rawness that made it all the more compelling.

The romance was also well-done, taking a backseat to the main plot but still managing to be incredibly sweet. Kit's support of Evan was truly heartwarming <3333
Additionally, the alternative history that the author created and the insights into this new British royal family were thoroughly enjoyable.

I must warn that there are triggering topics in the book, such as sexual assault, date rape drugs, mental illness, and adultery, but overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick & addicting read!!
