Story follows Amir from a child in Afghanistan through young adulthood in the US. Amir has a childhood friend, Hassan, who is the son of their servant. Eventually Amir and his father flee to the US when Russia occupies their country. Amir is a flawed character and doesn't always do the right thing. Interesting insight into Afghani culture before and after the Taliban take over.

A powerful and emotional story that really pulls you in. I was especially struck by how it explores guilt, loyalty, and the complicated nature of family and friendship. Some scenes were hard to read but incredibly impactful, and the characters felt very real, flawed but human. While a few plot points relied too much on coincidence, making parts of the story feel predictable, it didn’t take away from the overall experience.
