What a great read. I loved the subtle manipulations all the characters experienced.
It was a wild ride from page 1 almost all the way until the end and I won't lie I was not expecting who turned out to be the leader of the gang. What a surprise that turned out to be
I enjoyed how Jatin came into his own voice more while organizing the team to help free Adraa.
I would have liked a little more at the end to see how they would all turn out after the events of this book as I felt like there is more story left to tell.

⚰️ Mini Review ⚰️

It's not often the second book is better than the first in my opinion, but this one definitely was. I loved it. It is was sad but also sweet. I liked this one much more than the first. I honestly didn't know what was going to happen but the way they wanted to save her was just amazing. I loved this story. The ending was sad, but perfect.

This was excellent literature. Tens tens across the board.

The plot was great. The magic system was even better though at times, it was a little hard to understand because sometimes things were introduced to us so… abruptly (?) and never explained that well so there were times I kind of had to be okay with the fact that I do not comprehend what I’m reading.

The world building was also really really great but like above, some things were hard to wrap my head around. Like the dome and the Bloodlurst prison bit was kind of confusing.

Other than that, the world building was great. Also loved the Indian rep! The food, the clothes, the palaces, the different skin tones, the words. All of it was so cool to learn about.

I think the pacing was one of my favorite thing about this book. They were constantly in life or death situations and they had to act fast so I like how I could feel their urgency through the pacing of the story.

This wasn’t just Jatin and Adraa’s story. Each character has a backstory and each one is explored. I feel like I knew every character and their motivations and I loved that. Sometimes authors will introduce a character we’re meant to care about but they never give us enough backstory to make us care about them. This book wasn’t like that! Also appreciated how the characters weren’t all so one dimensional (Fiza).

….. AND FUCK MOOLEK! ME AND ALL MY HOMIES HATE MOOLEK!!!!….

prisha and harini are my favourite parts of the book. a decent follow-up to cast in firelight, but it confuses me that this series is only a duology. though i'm the first to appreciate fast-paced/relatively short fantasy novels, i still expected to learn more about the magic system, moolek's motivations, fiza and even the jailed women. definitely a strong sequel, but with lots of unexplored potential.

Following on from the events of Cast in Firelight, we see Adraa being wrongly accused and put on trial by her people for an explosion that left Belwar devastated. The verdict leaves Adraa sentenced to life imprisonment in the Dome, an impenetrable magic-infused fortress. Jatin, her betrothed, will stop at nothing to rescue Adraa from her captivity and prove her innocence to the people of Belwar. But not everything is as it seems - dark forces are pulling the strings and there is a bigger threat at play. Will Adraa and Jatin figure it out in time to save their countries and the people they love?

I loved this series completely and I'm so sad to be leaving Wickery! I'd jump at the chance to read more about Adraa and Jatin. This duology was perfect - it had action, cute romance and lots of empowering moments, magic and self-esteem wise. We got to see the introduction of some new characters, like Harini and Fiza, two very strong witches in their own right. The plot twists were fantastic and there was one I did not see coming so the shock factor was high! I know the plot needed the main characters to be separated but I felt the dual POV helped see both sides of the story until they found their way back to each other. I loved Adraa and Jatin's reunion! As well as that ending - it tied it all up with little hints about what their futures hold. I for one would love a return to Wickery someday...
I was lucky to win an eARC of this book so thank you to the author, Delacorte Press and NetGalley. I also preordered my own hardcopy because that cover is so gorgeous and it needed to be on my shelf!
