The problem, perhaps, with fiction like The Notebooks… (that is, fiction that meanders), is that it will inevitably meander in and out of any given reader’s field(s) of interest. Sebald’s The Rings of Saturn is another such example of this variety of fiction writing, and one which I felt meandered a bit too far outside of my fields of interest to be altogether captivating. The Notebooks…, however—and in spite of its meandering—struck chords within me whose resonances will tremble, I suspect, for a long time.

Also, William Gass' introduction in the edition I read is great! An unexpectedly useful and thoughtful supplement to the work. But of course, this should be no surprise.

I almost definitely would have got more out of this if I'd given myself more time to read it. Last minute skim reading does not an appreciative reader make. Some bits were really interesting and beautifully written, but a lot just went waaay over my head.

reading this is like putting yourself entirely at the submission of a fever dream, with all of its non-linear incoherence and sleep logic. it is a little overwhelming and something which, for me at least, has to be taken in bits and pieces (it took me over a year to finish it), but I love that peculiar brand of Profound Introspective Rambling™, and in the end I found this an extremely rewarding read.
