Even if you've seen the movie, this is a terrific book because you know WHAT happens but not HOW Bloch will get there. And there are some pretty signficant differences in the book and the movie, enough so that I was drawn into the story and even quite surprised at times with how events transpired. I'm envious of those who read the book without knowing the story, but regardless it's still a deeply unsettling read and explores some disturbing territory that Hitchcock and Bloch couldn't have attempted in a movie at the time. Rightly considered one of the greatest horror novels ever written.
Well played, Mr. Bloch. Well played. The plot twists hold up even in today's jaded, smartass audience environment. Norman Bates' crazy dude POV is particularly well done. You lose points for overexplaining in the epilogue. Crazy doesn't need rational explanation.
