I know this one is controversial in some ways, but the depth of emotion felt through the text is deeply moving in so many ways, and it feels impossible to separate that emotion from the age of Elio and the context they meet in.

Beautiful. I haven’t read the movie so I can’t compare the two, but I love this book for what it is.
I loved the descriptions of Oliver and Elio’s time in Rome. Definitely transported me to those sleepless nights of my youth where I felt similarly. The ending absolutely wrecked me. I’m glad I got to be gay in a later time than these two. And I’m so glad Elio’s father was as he was.

Call Me By Your Name was a much different book than I expected. The book is split into 4 sections, rather than traditional chapter breaks. It's so uniquely written, both in content as well as in its grammar and structure. The dialogue is generally intermixed with the rest of the text, and sometimes is expressed through Elio's thoughts rather than a character actually speaking aloud.

The book is an excellent commentary on sex and shame and fear and finding the courage to live the life that you want. It also beautifully sums up queer life and queer shame especially within religious communities. There are so many beautiful and relatable quotes.

I went into this book expecting to wholeheartedly ship the couple. So it was really interesting to see all of the contradicting feelings this book provokes. For the first good chunk of the book I didn't want them to be together at all, largely because of the age difference and the way they were toxic from the beginning. As the book went on they developed such a beautiful friendship that I began to root for them in some aspects. But that made me feel so conflicted because of all of the problematic elements of their relationship. It really was so good!
Fair warning to those who don't read spice, this book is 40% spice, 25% gay, 20% shame, and 15% vibes 😂

This was probably one of the easiest 5 stars i have ever given. The book is written with such masterful word crafting whilst also building characters that are human in every aspect. The story is perverted, it’s raw, it’s naked. It’s unapologetic for scenes that people may find rather repulsing. It’s about Elio and his infatuation with Oliver and how they come to be and how, despite the fact it’s been 20 years, they still care for and love one another. That is what i loved most compared to the movie. The ending has a completely different tone. It’s a summer read that i will reread many times in the future. I loved every second.

Great summer read, the writing was at sometimes too explicit…I normally don’t have a problem with sexual content in anyway but I had the feeling that the author just needed to write those scenes…it didn’t feel genuine to me.
Elios and Olivers relationship is very complicated but I think that the age gap (7 years) isn’t as bad as it is written.
Elio is 17 and Oliver 23 but in Europe the age of consent is 16, so personally I don’t feel like it’s that big of a deal (in no way am I romanticizing adult/minor relationships but it’s kind of normal where I life)
. Moving on in the end it didn’t make sense to me as to why Oliver did the things he did because it just didn’t fit in with his whole character arc. I’ll definitely read the sequel next month!
P.S. I can’t eat peaches anymore without feeling slightly sick 🥲

This is one of the best books I have ever read.
It’s such a poignant capture of a young love that pokes at its drama as much as it takes it seriously.
I don’t know how it’s possible to portray someone’s inner life so well. A literary masterpiece and one that will go down in the annals of literature.
