I really expected to enjoy this book, especially because I loved Mexican Gothic. However, this book was a disappointment for me. The love story between Domingo and Atl felt unrealistic. Domingo came across as
very immature and naïve, and given the age difference between the two it made it even harder to believe the romance. The book also felt as though it was more content driven with a lack of emotion. It made it very difficult for me to connect with or care about any of the characters except for the dog. I will give this authors more recent works a try, especially because I really did enjoy Mexican Gothic. However, this book was almost a DNF, and the only reason why I finished it was because DNF’ed the book that came before it and I didn’t do that twice.

I really loved the different lore for vampires and even the different types. Personally I wish we had gotten a bit more in depth world building with this, but that could be just because I’m usually more of a fantasy reader and I love the lore of worlds.
I did find it hard to connect much with the characters because there were several different POVs and for the length of the book, it just felt a little too much. I liked seeing the different sides of things but I didn’t feel like we stuck with any of them long enough to feel much.
Except Nick. I hated him.
I would really love to see another story set in this world. Whether it’s a prequel with Atl’s mom and Bernadino ( I would LOVE to learn more about him) and how vampires lived before and after humans found out about them. Or a continuation of Atl’s story. Even a story from a different vampire family that intersected with characters from this book would be neat.

I enjoyed how the vampire world is unlike any other I have read. It gave the vampires a culture that I haven't seen much of before, other than what is carried among hyped vampire books. My favorite character is Domingo. I can definitely see myself being like him when it comes to asking a bunch of questions. I would be interested in knowing about the whole vampire lifestyle without judgment. Nick gave off a misogynistic podcast bro because he was so angry when Atl didn't want him.

Loved this one. The setting and slow burn of the book was great and Silvia Moreno-Garcia was able to create a captivating Vampire story using mythology from all over the world. There is also a helpful glossary in the back with more lore stuff which was interesting. The ending came a little too quick for me but the characters/carnage/mystique/and stakes of the story were fabulous.
