I feel like I’m the only one who didn’t like this…and I really tried to, but it was just not for me.
1. I was so bored. The things that could have been darker and more thriller-ish fell super flat.
2. I seriously hated Clover! I hated that she shared SO LITTLE of herself with Maverick. He pined after her and all she could do was go back and forth over if it was wrong or right.
3. The emotion was just so lacking in the entire book. All of the conversations between characters was sooo dry.

I will give 3 stars cause I liked the story, liked the characters (despite them being shallow), and I appreciate that there was great grammar. But overall, this just didn’t do it for me.

Maverick Waters has always lived a charmed life. With a retired pro-hockey player for a father, hockey has always been a major part of his life. Now he just has to make it through his senior year of college before he can begin his own pro-hockey career. Everything is running smoothly until a mysterious woman floats up to Maverick’s dock on Pearl Lake. The two have a memorable one-night stand and go their separate ways, thinking they will never see each other again, that is until they run into each other on campus. They share a class, but Clover isn’t a student, she’s the professor.

Bitter Sweet Heart is the second book in Helena Hunting’s Love Hearts & Truths series. The first book, Little Lies followed Maverick’s sister Lavender and best friend, Kodiak. If you haven’t read that one, I would recommend starting there. I think Bitter Sweet Heart could be read as a standalone, but there’s a lot of setup in Little Lies that helps the reader understand who is who in the story. I would also recommend reading the Pucked and All In series', as this series follows the children of those characters, but it’s not as important for context.

The story is told in alternating first-person perspectives between Maverick and Clover. Maverick, Alex and Violet’s son from Pucked is now a college hockey player with plans to go pro in the next year. While Maverick is very confident and self-assured, he deals with anxiety, tracing back to when his sister Lavender was kidnapped when they were children. Maverick feels responsible for Lavender being kidnapped and has grappled with those feelings for his entire life. He makes it his mission to help women feel safe by teaching a self-defense course. Maverick is such a sweet, sensitive character. You can see parts of both Violet and Alex in his personality and I absolutely loved that.

Clover is Maverick’s creative writing professor. When they first meet, neither of them had any idea that Maverick would be Clover’s student, but naturally, this complicates things. To further complicate things, Clover is also still married. Her ex-husband is emotionally abusive and manipulative, and Clover is desperately trying to break free of him.

I thoroughly enjoyed Bitter Sweet Heart. It did a great job of filling the gap I’ve felt since finishing the Pucked series. It has the same charm, hilarious moments, and steam as the Pucked series, while also being a refreshingly new, unique story.

Thank you to Helena Hunting and Social Butterfly PR for the review copy! All opinions are my own.

Wow. Just wow. I couldn’t put this story down. Now that I have I have such an array of emotions. I laughed, I cried, I cried more. The story was excellent and obviously you need to read Lavender and Kody’s story too and well all of Helena’s books. Please just read the book!

This book had all the emotional impact of Little Lies but mixed with humor from Pucked. Maverick is definitely Violet’s son and the word vomit had me laughing out loud more than once. I loved Maverick and Clover so much. Maverick is so protective and holds so much baggage that I never would’ve guessed at if Helena hadn’t let us into his head. Clover is just what he needed and she needed him just as badly. This book was a perfect balance of angst and humor and I already can’t wait to reread it.

Bitter Sweet Heart by H Hunting

This is the second book in the Lies, Heart and Truth series from H.Hunting but can be read as a standalone!
Maverick Waters lives a charmed life and has everything he needs, family friends and hockey. One summer evening a stranger floats up to his dock. This chance meeting leads to a steamy one night stand where the two exchange nothing. It isn’t until Maverick walks into his creative writing that he sees his summer fling, only she isn’t a student but his professor

Helena has done it again! Mav is everything!

- Reverse Age-gap
- Student- Professor
- Hockey Romance
- Page Turner

The Angst!! Maverick Waters absolutely broke my heart. He puts too much pressure on himself. He’s still struggling from events that happened to his sister, Lavender as kids. He’s struggling with what he wants to do with his life.

He meets Clover and it’s an instant connection. They have a one night stand that he cannot stop thinking about. Now things are complicated because now she’s his professor.

I loved the emotional connection these two had. This was a page turner and I did not want it to end.
