Bitter Sweet Heart

Gah, I know I say this every time, but every time Helena Hunting writes a new book, the hero and heroine become my favourites.

Maverick and Clover are no different.

It was so refreshing (and relieving) to read about a couple that wasn't going to be millionaires or did horribly wrong things. Clover's ethics were beautiful, but Maverick's quiet persistence and effort were something else.

They met before they knew they'd have to see each other ... on campus. As a professor and her student.

They each had their own traumas, some of them from childhood, some from adult lives.

I couldn't help but be jealous of the support and unconditional love and kindness that they had for each other. The way that Maverick decided to change his life trajectory and do something that was more meaningful to him, was amazing.

I genuinely thought, Alex and Violet would react differently, but I'm so glad that they did what they did, because Clover needed to prove herself, and Maverick needed to learn to stand up for himself.

Clover and Maverick not only make a great couple, but both character grew throughout their story and proved that a romance novel isn't just about love.

Bitter Sweet Heart was about personal growth – emotional, mental and professional – and I enjoyed every last word.

I can't wait to read more about the Pucked kids, but for now I'll go back to rereading ... the whole saga of the Waters and their friends and families.

3.5 rounded up because of the audio.

I didn't love this as much as the first one but it was still sweet and sexy.

The way I loved this book...

Maverick Waters has carried the weight of his world on his shoulders since he was 8 years old. Clover Sweet is trying to carve out a future without her abusive ex. When they meet at the end of the dock, their chemistry is instant and undeniable. A few months later when Clover shows up as the substitute professor for Maverick's creative writing class things get ALOT more forbidden. Getting to know Maverick better in this book, I wanted to give him a hug so bad. Clover breathes life into Maverick's life he didn't know he needed and she made him feel grounded to something outside of hockey and his family. Addictive second gen!!

Rating: 5/5

It's crazy how much better this book was compared to the first one! The whole story started out as a ONS that turns to a slow burn that is just good and steamy. I loved that we got to see a different side of Maverick. In the first book, he was portrayed as such a himbo. Clover was a good buffer for him. She was intelligent, emotionally available, and though at times very insecure, their relationship felt solid.

Maverick is carrying the weight of his family on his shoulders and the guilt of a big brother in his heart. Clover is exactly what he needs, but can’t have. But, she needs him too, and their love and friendship are too strong to ignore. I can’t express how much I absolutely LOVED this book!

This was really good. I truly loved Maverick's overall growth as a character in this book. There was so many good conversations between characters (Alex and Mav's convo in chapter 38 had me almost in tears). Clover and Maverick's relationship was great also. Loved how Mav always stood up for his and Clover's partnership when anyone brought up their age difference and how there was a double standards when it's an older woman not a man. Also seeing Violet and Alex being parents (even though Vi did have a scene with Clover that had me a little agitated but, it was coming from an overprotective parent place).
The only qualm I did have was the pacing. It really slowed down in the middle where they were just a student and professor and walking on egg shells around each other. Also the chapter before the epilogue was kinda quirky to me and didn't really fit in.
Trigger Warnings: manipulative relationship (past), gaslighting, stalking, and physical assault
