I had high hopes for this book but I felt like it fell short in delivering what's expected from it. There were lots of things that the author want to include in the story (like scientific theories) and it just felt that it was rushed. I would've wanted to know more about the Nibelung lore. It was hard to build a connection with Hayden, the protagonist.

DNF at 57% for being heavy-handed and too ridiculous and absurd to even, enjoy.

Don't get me wrong. I love science fiction. I love fantasy. I particularly love that sub-genre of dark urban fantasy that Holly Black and Neil Gaiman do so well. And maybe Holly Black and Neil Gaiman ruined me for urban fantasy because I did not enjoy "What the Woods Keep." The fusion of norse mythology and quantum physics-- done so well in the Thor film franchise-- felt corny and forced in Katya de Becerra's novel. While it doesn't have any overwhelmingly glaring flaws, it feels like it is missing the critical element that would help it rise above the masses of YA Adventure and Fantasy novels that inundate the shelves of Barnes and Noble every year. Give it a try if Niflheim is your thing, but prepare yourself for a perfectly mediocre work of prose.

This seemed to have almost everything. Creepy, mysterious, fast-paced, action. Real and likeable characters. I had trouble putting this book down. The writing is very mature for a YA book.

Kind of reminded me of a mix between Witches of East End and Haven (the tv shows). Which is not a bad thing, I really enjoyed the story and the familiar feeling. The mix of urbanish fantasy, mystery and thriller were perfect for me. First person present tense was a bit odd, but I quickly got used to it and the addition of snippets of medical reports, letters and the like gives us readers extra info that the MC doesn't have - removing some of the limits that first person often has.
If she writes a sequel it will go near the top of Mount TBR.

This was really hard to rate. The plot and the writing were quite interesting and could have made 4 stars. HOWEVER, the frequent science lectures that started most chapters were incredibly irritating and unnecessary. It felt like a constant interruption to the story line, and the random jump to address the reader came across as condecending. Also while I liked the idea of mixing up the content by including alternative formats, the information (at least in the first half of the book) was literally the same as the text just repeated in another format.
It did improve in the second half... Perhaps it might be better after a re-read now I know what I can skim over.

DNF at page 70. I wanted something more paranormal and witchy but this is going in some sort of alien being direction. I also don't like the MC at all. I skimmed to the end and it just confirms that this isn't for me.

This book was very mediocore. I really liked the premise but the execution wasn't the best. The characters felt flat and there was really nothing too them. The plot was better than the characters, so if you enjoy that sort of thing this book is for you, however I just needed some more personality to the characters. The ending was alright, nothing ground breaking. But I really liked the letters and files sprinkled throughout the story. I have no strong emotions for this book, it was just mid.
