My March bookclub pick with my besties was The Oysterville Sewing Circle by Susan Wiggs. I believe this was the first book all of us had read by her.
The Oysterville Sewing Circle started as a way for Caroline to give back to the friend she lost. To find a way to connect to her friends children who were now in her care. This group of women came together under an inconspicuous name, to share their stories and survival of domestic abuse. Every single woman had a different story, a past.
There were so many things covered throughout the book, while talking we all felt the cover was a little deceiving. The Oysterville Sewing Circle was about family, and coming home when you need support, because you know they will be there. It was about small towns and reaching for bigger goals in even bigger cities. It was about friendship, and digging deeper before it is too late. Lastly, it is about love ... first loves, lost loves and love that is deserved no matter what anyone in your past says.
This book was like the warm hug of a hallmark movie but with depth. We all really enjoyed it.
Thank you Book Club Girl and William Morrow for this surprise book. The one we all really enjoyed but didn’t know we even needed to read.

While this did have potential, it was hollow in many spots. At times, it felt like the author didn’t truly know her own characters.

Heartwrenching with its raw, genuine emotions about situations all too real for some women, The Oysterville Sewing Circle was a touching novel about the devastating effects of abuse, but even more so, the strength that can be drawn from female friendships.
Sadly, this will *not* be an easy read for far too many women out there. But in my humble opinion, it was an extremely important story to tell, particularly in this age of the #MeToo movement–which is briefly mentioned. Told through the eyes of three very different characters who had been friends since they were teenagers, Caroline, Will, and Sierra were quite convincing in their emotions, reactions, and their fallibility. Ooof. This was a rough one for me, but I'm not sure if it was the book or my attitude. I got the ARC and then let it sit on a table and guilt me for a couple weeks, read the first quarter and resented its vague Hallmark movie vibe, then skimmed the rest. I think the right reader would love this, but that reader isn't me.

I was so looking forward to this book, but was really disappointed. It was very predictable and though it centered around very important topics of abuse and empowerment, I just felt it fell flat.
A timely novel with a unique depiction of drug use, domestic violence, sexual assault, family, and relationships. Caroline has returned to Oysterville from a decade in the New York fashion world with a ruined career but as the legal guardian of two orphans of domestic violence. I enjoyed the characters and the struggles they went through as their situations changed and the way the book depicted the impact of domestic violence on not just the abusers and the abused but their friends and family as well. The romance between Caroline and Will and the courtroom revelation at the end were a little too predictable but I found them satisfying none the less and enjoyed the way the story got there unfolding in the present as well as in flashbacks. I received a free ARC of this novel through the Goodreads First Reads giveaways
