It broke me and half and had a bowl of kimchi jjigae waiting to heal me back to health. Ugh ugh ugh. How did Japanese Breakfast get even better. If you have a complicated mother relationship, pick this up.

Feelings I’ve never considered trying to express words, there on the page. In so many ways - realizing motherhood & parenthood as one grows up, (Korean) identity, sacrifice & devotion - precise and beautifully written.

This book really makes you appreciate your family and the traditions they cherish. Michelle brings her memories of her mom, her rebellious teen years, and their moments of role reversal before her mother’s death together beautifully in a memoir that immerses you in the culture of first generation Korean-Americans. It took me a while to finish this one, but after I switched to audiobook I think my experience was greatly enhanced. (Likely due to my inability to pronounce all of the tasty Korean foods). Overall, definitely recommend this to my mid 20s pals who are busy trying to bring back childhood memories while coming to terms with the fact that all of our lives change drastically at this stage.
