*I DON'T RATE MEMOIRS*
I have heard so much about this book and I knew I was going to pick it up at some point. I knew that, as a middle reader, I needed to be in the right headspace to appreciate its content. It was incredible. I was in awe of the painful vulnerability of Michelle pointing out her flaws, putting them on full display, and sharing the bigger picture. The ugly parts make the beautiful parts leave a lasting impression. I cried. I loved it. Excellent book.

Crying. At home. Wow so vulnerable to write about something so devastating. I really admire Michelle for writing this. Going through something like this SUCKS. And to write about it can probably suck even more. So I admire her for writing about something so horrible. Mother daughter relationships. GOD. It’s so hard and I feel like no one is doing it right. Everyone is struggling with it. There is no formula for having a good mother daughter relationship. And it’s unfortunately something that you will probably have to work at your entire life. And in this unfortunate case, she had to lose her mom as soon as it was getting better. The loss of culture and the constant effort to try to stay connected to it is genuinely challenging. I’m on this journey and so many of us. No other words to say it’s just a journey.

Really enjoyed this one though it didn’t quite grip me. It’s a memoir that touches on profound topics on identity and family, but I didn’t find Zauner’s writing particularly captivating. What makes Crying in H-mart special is Zauner’s storytelling and authenticity. That’s what kept me going as I read a couple of chapters every night before bed.
