DNF. I usually like Oprah’s book club books, but couldn’t get I to this one.
Long, which is normally a quality I enjoy in books, but this book takes place over a summer and it feels like every character's individual thoughts are written out, without progressing the story. Also kind of depressing. Long and depressing. Don't read it unless that's what you're into.
I absolutely hated this book. It was a long book - destined to be a "summer read" but frankly none of the characters interested me in the least. I wanted to like them or hate them or something, but really couldn't bring myself to feel anything.
By the time I finished, I yearned for some sense of closure and din't find any.

Songs in Ordinary Time by Mary McGarry Morris is about a family touched by alcoholism, the Fermoyles. The father is a ne'er-do-well drunk as well and as totally unlovable as can be. He is obnoxious and sloppy and violent when he's drunk and Marie Fermoyle had to get herself out of that marriage too. The difference is that she and her children struggle on alone in the same town, suffering the indignities and embarrassment of the drunken father staggering around. There are lots of interesting characters in this book and each has a tale of their own. All of their lives are threaded together in a way that wasn't cumbersome at all. A con man arrives in town...and there's a murder ... I just loved reading this book! It's not a quick read but well worth it!
Not only was this book unbelievably boring, but it was painfully long as well. Several hours of my life wasted that I will never get back!!!!
This book was the most depressing, disheartening book I have ever read. For over 800 pages you keep thinking "Things can't get worse, they've got to start getting better." Oh yes they can and oh no they don't. Unless your life is really crappy right now and you want to read the only book where people have it worse than you, don't waste your time.
Well this wasn't quite as bad as the reviews I skimmed over had made it out to be. Granted, there seemed to be very few likable characters who had any redeeming qualities but maybe that's a little more realistic than I'd care to admit. It was still very well written overall.
Until I saw this on a friend's "currently reading" list, I had forgotten this book existed.
i read this book when it first came out and I was in college. i remember being utterly depressed, but impressed by the writing in this heartbreaking novel.
i felt such a connection to every character. each one was written with such spirit and life, i got lost in the story as if it were happening around me.
i know that this story warrants a second read, as it took me to a place of despair and hope and frustration all at the same time.
great book.
